Care home owner and critic of Scottish Government on PPE is Tory donor and anti-independence activist

Speaking on Good Morning Scotland and reported in the Press & Journal on 13th April:

Mr Kilgour, a Tory party donor, said: “My reading of this is that it’s pure spin, frankly, from the Scottish Government. “It’s no new money as far as I can see. All they’ve done is announced what has been agreed on the annual pay award. It’s always done on April 1 every year. Mr Kilgour accused the Scottish Government of trying to pass off a previous arrangement as a measure to help control coronavirus, adding: “All they’ve done is packaged and announced it as if it is new money.” The care home boss also claimed local authorities in England were “doing more than what we’re getting in Scotland, definitely”.

A reader has helpfully drawn our attention to mention of Kilgour in a Wings report in 2018:

Too much to expect BBC to mention that Robert KIlgour who is bumping his gums about care homes is a significant Tory donor and set up a Scottish business campaign group to oppose a future independence referendum, warning that supporters of union with the UK have become too complacent about the threat of secession. The Scottish Business UK group founded by care home entrepreneur Robert Kilgour will announce this month the creation of an advisory board that includes a leading publisher and a former chairman of employers’ lobby CBI Scotland. Also Think Scotland, a conservative-minded website is funded by Scottish unionist businessman Robert Kilgour. Think Scotland is owned by former Tory MSP [now Brexit MSP living in France] Brian Monteith.

‘Pro-independence’ newspaper, the National, has also given Kilgour space to complain, apparently unaware of his background or agenda:

BBC Scotland, of course, happily quote Kilgour, without reference to his background.

  2. Well, they didn’t package and announce it as if it was new money. What an arse that guy is. (Note correct usage of ‘arse’)

I think it was Jeanne Freeman being interviewed on radio Scotland said that this was the normal time of year they would make an agreement, but they decided to announce the settlement early to give care workers certainty and to let them know they’d ALL be receiving the real living wage from this pay rise onward, and would be paid for every hour worked. We all know who is spinning.

Why doesnt he mention about Westminsters lie apon lie. They were prepared for everything. The dilly dallied for weeks and that itself might have saved thousands of lifes. But no they.blame everyone else. From china withholding vital data and WHO telling them lies and many other factors not complying with them. All to cover up there total arrogance and misleadings . They should be held accountable for this. And booted out of government permanently.

  4. 3 weeks ago, I offered the UK Gov a direct connection for Diagnostic testing kits from South Korea that have proven to be efficient, direct from factory, unlike the ones the bought that don’t. I also offered them a connection to two friends, one in Singapore and one in Hong Kong who also supply and have stocks of PPE. Yesterday my friend in Hong Kong sent 500 000 masks to the USA. I have heard nothing back from our Gov. So if private companies/ organisations/ trusts are interested in either Testing kits or PPE I will be happy to formally introduce you to my friends in Asia and you can order direct.

  5. Talking about the very regrettable rate of deaths at Care homes I seem to recall that 20+years ago the Gov brought in legislation that opened the door to Corporate Manslaughter charges that could apply to Managers/Owners if they did not comply with Health & Safety regulations and put Employees and those in their charge at risk. Not sure if would apply to exceptional circumstances like this Pandemic but perhaps some of your more enlightened readers might throw some light on this.
