8 000 every week unchecked for covid-19 allowed into Scotland because of reserved UK border controls but the Herald doesn’t quite explain why

The Herald tried to report on this for their headline story this morning. We’ve had to make their headline, above, more informative and sorted out the opening paragraphs with some bold and necessary insertions:

MORE than 8000 visitors a week are continuing to arrive in Scotland from home and abroad without health checks because border control is a reserved matter and UK Border Control is doing SFA about it while the nation continues to be in lockdown and undergo social distancing in the coronavirus pandemic, it has emerged.

Estimates provided to the Herald reveal that while arrivals from home and abroad at Scotland’s airports have been decimated by the global pandemic, thousands continue to come into the country but without any testing or quarantining for the virus whatsoever by UK Border Control because this Tory government cannot do anything properly and we’d be far better off on our own.

As before, no charge.

  1. Shows us once again how much we are short changed in this awful Union . This is definitely an area that needs to be devolved until independence, we have to be able to secure our own borders ! .

  2. Westminster will never “allow” Scotland to close it’s borders, certainly not the land border with England.
They have to maintain the edifice of ein reich, ein volk, ein fuhrer.
However,it will be at a huge political future cost when Scots realise how many lives have been lost as a consequence.
That is,of course, providing HM press allow us to find out about it.

  3. Here is a very critical article in the Times (archived so no pay wall) of the UK govt – it’s totally anglocentric but at least actually criticises the English govt:

    https://archive.is/20200418182037/https://www.thetimes.co.uk/edition/news/coronavirus-38-days-when-britain-sleepwalked-into-disaster-hq3b9tlgh

I haven’t read it all – it’s very long – but it seems to be debunking what they give in the final paragraph:

“A Downing Street spokesman said: “Our response has ensured that the NHS has been given all the support it needs to ensure everyone requiring treatment has received it, as well as providing protection to businesses and reassurance to workers. The prime minister has been at the helm of the response to this, providing leadership during this hugely challenging period for the whole nation.””

Bare faced liars and charlatans in charge of our glorious union perhaps? Who’d have guessed eh.

    1. Yes its a good article…. but still misses out several of the absolute howlers made by the Westminster government and Boris… for example refusing the chance to bulk buy ventilators along with the EU which would have arrived more quickly & more cheaply — and instead give an order to the generous Tory doner the billionaire vacuum cleaner manufacturer Dyson at a time when we have a huge shortage of ventilators which give seriously ill Corona victims a chance to stay alive. Dyson has never made ventilators and still hasn’t come up with any as far as I know – it would hit the headlines if he had. Then the government told a downright lie that they had missed an email. I watch Euronews instead of BBC & it was the first to announce the bulk order and note that Boris Johnson DECLINED saying the the UK would go it alone. Euronews mentioned that this was after a UK government representative had attended 6 meeting s about the bulk order and that they do not conduct their business by email. The Westminster government also refused to take part in a similar EU bulk order for PPE. The Westminster government should be charged with crimes against humanity as by giving preference to Tory doners they have caused the death of hundreds if not thousands of UK citizens from lack of vital equipment and PPE.

  4. And here is an article in Vietman, a poor country, successfully controlling the epidemic outbreak:

    https://consortiumnews.com/2020/04/16/covid-19-vietnam-winning-new-war-against-invisible-enemy/

I was trying to think of the re easons why Scotland couldn’t have followed a similar path – one reason is we don’t have as much experience of devastating epidemics. But one of the key things Scotland doesn’t have control of – our borders. Vietnam acted quickly and shut borders, this gave them manageable control, while Scotland had to wait… And wait… And wait. We NEED independence. We NEED control over these fundamental national structures. Border control, fiscal autonomy, independent governance… Why shouldn’t we have what every other nation has? Why are there people still beholden to the self serving incompetent UK govt? Sickening when people are dying because of it.

  5. This 8000 is but a small part of the number of people who are crossing from England intoScotland and from NI into Scotland.

The virus has had a much larger effect on the population of England, not least because it is so large compared to Scotland’s. The people from England pass unchecked ,unhindered, uncounted and are certainly not tested. It is they who constitute a major vector of infection in Scotland.

The people crossing the border are mainly going about helping provide essential services and goods. Because, there was no testing in England, they were crossing into Scotland in good faith.

Of course, ‘border posts at Gretna’ was a shibboleth of the unionists. And the same unionists make sure that border control and immigration is retained at Westminster.

Is the Herod, even worthy of being used as toilet paper nowadays?

  6. This is from the Taipei Times based on academic research.

    https://www.taipeitimes.com/News/editorials/archives/2020/03/22/2003733144

“When simulating the transmission dynamics of an emerging epidemic disease, these programs execute hundreds or thousands of simulations to cover all possible circumstances and variables. They try to include factors that governments might not anticipate, using variations of common transmission patterns, and making modifications in response to urgent or rare situations.

These models consider many aspects of overseas travel, including flying, processing customs paperwork, checking in and retrieving luggage. The details of the international travel system are the same whether they occur in Turkey, Egypt, Europe, the US or any other country.

Based on these factors and our experience, Chen is correct in asserting that this coronavirus can be found in the cabins of many airplanes, and therefore people should avoid flying. However, not enough emphasis is being placed on the roles of international airports in spreading COVID-19, due to the numerous passengers and many aircraft arriving for maintenance.

From a statistical point of view, the probability of physically encountering the novel coronavirus or of being exposed to infected individuals in large international airports or in the cabins of airplanes is much higher than in homes, workplaces, schools or other public spaces.

These pandemic simulations show that large international airports and airplane cabins are major sources of risk, and are high on the list of reasons COVID-19 has spread so widely and quickly.

To protect the health of all individuals and their families, and to help the government delay the spread of COVID-19 in Taiwan, people must avoid all international air travel and airports during the pandemic.”

  7. Thought Brexit was supposed to about taking back control. So when a valid reason to close the borders arose, this Westminster government are found to be liars or in competent, again!

    1. You couldn’t make it up.

We wanted BREXIT in order to take back control of our border and when we really do need to have control of our border we don’t use it.

And we find that EU member states – even those in the Schengen area – actually do already have control of their border when then need it, and when necessary – as now – they exert the control as sovereign states.

“The pandemic has already prompted almost a dozen of the 26 countries in Europe’s border-free Schengen zone to shut their borders, either fully or partially, to visitors over coming weeks. Thus ending the right to free movement for many of the EU’s 400 million citizens, as well as tourists, business people and foreign residents.”

  8. Interesting what you can find on the BBC’s website (and on the Red Button) if you do some digging (having nothing else to do!)
I found that the Covid -19 death toll in the UK is 16,060, but of course that’s not a headline figure anywhere. To find it you have to go to BBC News – UK – Wales – to a headline about the Welsh death toll (584) and the UK total is in that article.
I still haven’t found the England death toll, although Scotland’s and Northern Ireland’s are easy to find.
Also, tucked away on the BBC News site, under UK – England – Regions – Isle of Man, you’ll find that the Isle of Man closed its borders on the 16th March.
If you look at UK – England – Regions – West & South West – Cornwall, you’ll find that the Isles of Scilly have cut transport links too.
Strange that you don’t see that news being reported…
