Scotland’s ‘Bridge of Sighs of Pleasure’ nibbled at by Rattus Scotsmanicus

In the Scotsman today, the above headline for a report on ongoing maintenance at the Queensferry Crossing.

‘Scotland’s bridge of sighs?’ What sort of mind came up with that? The original in Venice was so named because it was the last sight convicts saw before their imprisonment.

It only goes to Fife! It’s not that bad. My mum and my sister live there and seem to like it. Mind you, it is the way to Willie Rennie’s home.

We’ve had this before. A multi-million capital project that needs maintenance – who’d have thought that? What about that Rail Bridge? Will they ever be able to stop painting it?

Is this what the Queensferry Crossing really means for Scotland, for the folk who built it, for the folk who commissioned it, the Scottish Government and by association, the SNP?

Here are some reminders as to why it is a bridge of sighs but only if you mean sighs of admiration and relief:

  1. They are scrabbling around for something to write about and recycle old ‘stories’. Probably one of their ‘journalists’ lives in North Queensferry and from her/his window saw a maintenance contractor stop, get out of his van and start to do some work.

  2. If only Scotland wasn’t plagued by so many rats. Scotsman, Herald and Record to name but three. Isn’t there something about rats and sinkings? 😀

  3. It’s actually wonderful to talk about this bridge a truly magnificent structure and I do sigh every time I cross it , I sigh in wonderment and appreciation of its beauty, it is a beautiful bridge.
The idiots who write for the newspapers in Scotland are thick, they keep doing us favours, I love it when they remind everyone about this bridge because it shows them what Scotland can do without any input whatsoever from England l

  4. It is amazing that a bridge which was brought in on time and under budget gets so much negative press here. The rest of the worlds construction industry wants to know how it was done, because most large bridge projects throughout the world are currently and historically hugely over budget and extremely late in their delivery. Yet all we get is a constant stream of uninformed negative press against the bridge and by proxy the SG.
It is almost as if the Scottish press have their collective thumb on the self destruct button and are determined to push it. They are however in a true Catch 22 situation as a lot of them are paid by the UK Goverment (a term which I use lightly) to write this propaganda.

  5. Definitely getting harder for the propagandists to come up with the daily negativity required to sustain the Union.

Surely dreaming up negative reports for an occupation can’t be good for the soul.
