Inspired by former US President, Scots Tory leader claims cure for Covid-19 is to say no to Indyref-21!

Jackson Curlew and President Richard Nixon (1970)

In an interview with the PA, yesterday, Scottish Conservative Branch Manager, Jackson Curlew was asked about the effects of the virus outbreak on politics in Scotland. He just shouted:

‘Say no to Indyref-21!’

Readers, I was shocked, both by his poor taste in these tragic times but also by a flashback to the Vietnam War in 1970, when President Richard Nixon, above, was asked what he would do about the disease caused by the toxic chemical defoliant, Agent Orange, that was spreading through both the civilian population and US troops. Without pausing, Nixon shouted:

‘No surrender. Bomb them into submission!’

President Richard Nixon wearing his ‘Friends of Agent Orange’ award sash in a secret visit to the garden centre which supplied the defoliant, in Larkhall Scotland, England (1975).

  2. Carlot should ponder what a “good” pandemic his Lord and master Boris is having. By actually catching the virus he has escaped all the obvious questions about his governments woeful response—indeed his own response, shaking hands with all and sundry in hospitals?
His own father and one of his Ministers blanking the prohibition to stay at home-don’t go to pubs–dont go to your second home (OK if you are a Tory, apparently).
While its GOOD that Boris has come through this with his health intact, his conduct has been lamentable.
Carlot is panicking because even the tame colonial media is struggling to give him a slot for his perpetual whining.

    1. O. K. John. They both have that vacant, glaikit look about them–agreed. But………
Trickie Dickie won the odd election. Murdo zilch.
Trickie Dikie went to China to make a deal. Murdo has never been to China, never made a deal.
Trickie Dickie had a weasel brain called Kissinger. Murdo has no brain.
T.D started Detente, devolved power from Federal to State government, ended the Vietnam war, presided over Appolo 11.
Murdo doesn’t go out when the moon is full, and his list of achievements would fill a postage stamp—a small one.

      Apart from that, yup—very similar!

      1. I remember an interview with a very senior professional civil servant in the US following his retirement, having served every president from Harry Truman to George W. Bush.

Although many of the senior posts in the US Government are presidential and, hence, political employees, and hence often do not have any real grasp of the nuances, there are career civil servants who are of very high intellectual quality – seriously clever. And most are committed to the idea of the good governance of the US, irrespective of the colour of the administration.

This person had had a stellar academic career and was brought into the highest levels of the civil service at a young age and advised the President, whoever that was. The kind of objective and rigorous information and advice people like him gave was very complex to reflect the multi-faceted nature of issues facing the US Government. Since the President has to make the key decisions, he was asked how well Presidents coped with understanding the intricacies. As we expected, it was pretty variable, with some barely aware of what day it was and most having a reasonable appreciation with the assistance of special advisers.

Two Presidents, in his opinion, stood out in their ability to grasp the sheer complexity of issues. One was Bill Clinton and the other was ……. Richard Milhous Nixon!
