BBC Scotland selective with the evidence on protective kit

From stewartb:

It’s interesting to compare and contrast the BBC News website’s coverage of this story and that of many other online media outlets. The quotes attributed to Dr Hanif are especially notable.

The is from the BBC (Source: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-52204685 ):

‘The open letter from health workers, which was co-ordinated by Dr Shahzad Hanif, acknowledged that “some PPE has now been provided”.’

But then there is quote from Dr Hanif used by the news agency, PA:

“There are certainly signs that the quantity of protective equipment is certainly coming through now, certainly into primary care where I work and messages I have had from secondary care echo that – that’s less of a concern to us now, to be honest.”

Given the recent media emphasis on the lack of PPE for clinicians, is the latter comment not significant – even newsworthy?

(Source: https://www.aol.co.uk/news/2020/04/08/dozens-of-medics-sign-letter-expressing-concern-over-quality-of/?guccounter=1&guce_referrer=aHR0cHM6Ly9kdWNrZHVja2dvLmNvbS8&guce_referrer_sig=AQAAAJt9_NhOmBeF_SR-yFLNOXQ2Mq4UT48vSUr4ZwgDH72nRsR7GtnqQOnkadBGcOzphMMVEUj68MNsTUt2cWI94sUvfW3shOk-Ll5QMD3wH7uw5Z-gpZygOOp6jZ_3B7Tx9IvAbQ7R0XjNAKepaPgVTElTraxl47QaWTTkFYSSiTeO )

So one source emphasises ‘some provided’ and the other ‘ less of a concern to be honest’. You would of course have been able to guess which was the BBC ‘framing’ even without the links to sources!

  1. It will not of course have escaped anyone’s notice if watching the ‘full’ Scot Gov Briefings that the questions from ‘journalists’ are not about extracting more factual information or getting clarification on issues to inform the few readers they have left but instead to seek out weaknesses they can exploit. It is forlorn hope I guess that someday we might just get a Scottish media that we can respect and offers a balanced view on anything.

    1. What a shocking bunch they are. ..scavengers.
We won’t be free of them until we’re independent. And perhaps even that’s no guarantee.

      1. I think that might be wishful thinking, the media thing is a worldwide problem and they won’t change overnight. Norway has an interesting model – newspapers nearly all government funded but the freeest press around.

If we were independent, we could CHOOSE if we wanted to do that.

“ The media thing is a world wide problem”

Scotland’s media isn’t typical of the media in any other developed western economy.
Our media peddle the propaganda of a foreign state.

      3. Sam, yes this is true that Scottish media is bizarrely very anti-Scottish – but the entire worldwide MSM stick to the capitalism / neo-liberal / neo-conservative etc accepted narrative – look at the UN special Raporteur report on Julian Assange, no ‘official’ press agency would publish it – white helmets in Syria, worldwide made up bollocks about them, there are lots of examples. As an independent country, we shouldn’t have that anti-Scottish slant, unless we aren’t part of the ‘accepted narrative’, or we take better control of the media. I’m just saying, it won’t automatically get better.

    2. I’m not listening to the briefings every day but did today, and you are right, they have got over their initial shock and it’s business as usual trying to stir things up for maximum bad press. It’s not a good look. The government had to release a statement that you can let your cat out because of some shit the media made up about cats being infectious – the msm really are panic merchants, and time wasters. Why don’t they do something useful?!

  2. Donald McCaskill, representing the (private?) care sector brought up some valid concerns and has now said they’ve had a productive meeting this afternoon with Scottish government – this may not have been reported by the BBC?

One of the issues with all this fracas with PPE is that many care workers, especially home carers, won’t know what kind they need or proper use, and demand for the incorrect type of PPE won’t be helpful. I hope the discussions sort out the BBCs misunderstanding of the situation. The media are actually becoming a hindrance now, people’s lives are at risk from excessive misreporting.

  3. I agree with what you all say about the media but what possesses Nicola sturgeon to actually behave the way she does ? every day , answering their questions as if their questions are normal and appropriate ? any fool watching it knows they’re not.
And then she announces that Scotland’s national registry office is now going to issue figures showing details of the number of
people dying from things other than covid19 who also happen to have covid19

people dying from things other than covid19 who don’t appear to have covid19 but you never know they could have been in the early stages

And people dying where it’s not conclusive what killed them but it’s just possible it could have been covid19

What the hell is she doing ?
