David Leask reveals Scotland massively subsidising electricity supply in England

In a Herald report by David Leasky, alleged Lance-corporal in the 77th Brigade and champion of the Union, we read the headline:

‘Record £745m of wind power exported by Scotland’

It’s nearly there. It should be:

Record £745m of electricity exported by Scotland to England

Not enough space?

Things are clearly better together. For obvious reasons, I can’t see if he has mentioned the fact that as well as providing all this we pay extra for the pleasure. We reported on this some time ago:

In Energy Voice on 28 January 2020:

‘Mammoth Highland offshore wind farms are footing a bill of around £20 million more per year than English projects to connect to the grid, according to the builder of what will be Scotland’s biggest wind venture. The levied regime in the UK, called transmission charging and set up by the energy regulator Ofgem, is understood to be a major disadvantage to projects in the windiest regions of Scotland – with a £20m per year price tag that could rise to £30m by 2025’

Not only is Scotland paying extra to connect to the grid, but the electricity is then being transferred to England, Wales and Northern Ireland to compensate for their lack of generation and to help the UK appear to be meeting its carbon reduction target. See:

Government figures reveal the massive and increasing level of transfer of electricity from Scotland to England. In 2018 only, the transfer rate increased from 13 512 GWh to nearly 25 000 GWh. 1 GWh would heat 700 000 homes! This 83% increase is hidden in the above 53.8% increase total adopted.

Note that the ratio of transfers from Scotland to England compared with those from England to Scotland is 25 to 1!

  1. The cost of using electricity is highest in the North of Scotland—where lots is generated , than the South of England—where they produce zilch.

    1. This is what “Bodger” Broon means when he talks about ‘pooling and sharing’. What is England’s ruling financial class’s is England’s ruling financial ruling class’s, but what belongs to the rest of us (in Scotland, Wales Northern Ireland and most of England) is what is pooled and shared. In fact the financial class has to get the biggest share because they will ‘invest’ it and let the ‘nectar trickle down’

  2. Not on topic, but it’s the 700th anniversary of the declaration of arbroath, and Leslie Riddoch has stepped up and made sure there is something to celebrate the occasion, here she is talking about the documentary, video is online now:

  3. And once independent, and whatever (daft) border posts our neighbours may threaten to establish between Gretna and Berwick, all we need when exporting this valuable asset to England – on terms we can set – will be a new ‘meter’!

And I can think of other valuable Scottish assets much needed by England that will (just) require metering of the exports.
