Growth of coronavirus deaths in Scotland remains slow

Today, we heard of another tragic death bringing the Scottish figure up to 3 though it now emerges that the first case was a French rugby fan arriving in Edinburgh already infected.

Pro rata, we might expect the UK rate to be 12 times that of Scotland at 36 but it is now 104, almost three times higher.

As of today, then, with 3 mortalities in 227 hospitalised cases, the Scottish mortality rate is 1 in 76.

Across the UK, with 104 in 2 626 cases, the mortality rate is 1 in 25.

  1. Garry Gibbon Ch4 reported . . . One third of reported Coronavirus cases are in London. Possible use of police to enforce more responsible behaviour

    1. It is my impression that the journalists on the broadcast media and in much of the press are, by design or training seeking to stoke panic. It reminds me at times of the early Channel 4 sitcom “Drop the Dead Donkey”, in which the Stephen Tompkinson character, in particular would set up things so that he could provide ‘evidence’ of the cock-and-bull stories he had thought up.

I think that there is also in the training of journalists a drumming in of ‘always look for the dirty washing’, and, when they think they have found it, the use bias by omission to select ‘facts’ to fit the story. There is also the ‘good news is no news mindset’.

I think it develops a distorted cynical personality which is misanthropic – they view everyone with suspicion.

Of course, not all journalists are like that, but, I think that with the precariousness of jobs and the increasingly overt right wing control of the media they are under pressure to produce ‘stories’ which fit the owners’ politics.

This is not new and, has probably been there since newspapers started, but, with falling circulations and niche readerships I think they reflect the partial views of their dwindling and ageing readership.

Although I am ageing, my readership of newspapers has tailed off markedly. If I get one – and increasingly, they are given away free, then I mainly do the crosswords and sudoku and when I have finished, I draw specs and moustaches on photos of ‘celebrities’ and black out some of their teeth.

  2. It’s still penny numbers though. And shameful lack of testing means we don’t really know what the baseline numbers are in either case. Could be a lot more undiagnoses cases in England. Time will tell.

    1. Agreed, but our MSM regularly use far smaller numbers based on self-selecting samples and questions put by partisan groups like the BMA to cast NHS Scotland in a negative light. 4 cases in Glasgow hospitals were made into a rationale for a public inquiry.
