Preaching to the converted? Is Talking-up Scotland helping to persuade some former No-voters and undecideds to change?

This survey has some pretty obvious limitations to its validity but, nevertheless, does offer some evidence that just over 5% of the followers of TuSC have switched to Yes from having been No voters or undecided in 2014, not necessarily because of TuSC. A 5% swing would, of course be enough to reverse the 52 to 48 loss in 2014 to a narrow win of the kind we’ve seen in recent polls.

In sharp contrast, only 0.4% seem to have swung from Yes to No or undecided.

On Twitter, TuSC has 3 888 followers and the post today, trying to answer the question in the headline above, was shared by 124 of them to a wider audience generating more than 7 500 impressions.

This is a self-selecting sample of the followers of a pro-independence blog with all the problems of validity and reliability that brings.

  1. On at least two occasions very recently, in conversations with pro-indy folk who were planning to be more active in writing letters to their local papers, I advised them that ‘Talking Up Scotland’ was a good place to find ideas for letter content. So there are other ways in which your efforts John may get amplified.

  2. i have been sharing some of your articles on facebook-good to have chapter and verse rational counter to the drivel pumped out by msm-some undecided will read these posts, so i suspect the effect is more widespread than apparent-please keep it up!

  3. I agree with stewartb, it’s not necessarily the direct contact here with people that might need persuaded – how do you get them to seek out a blog when there are so many online news sources, and mainstream claiming everyone but them is untrustworthy (!), and people aren’t aware of the need – that makes people change their minds on independence, but this blog gives others the resources, and a place to guide people, who are open to reading alternative views and context on news items, to.

It’s an impossible question to test really. But because you don’t preach, I don’t think you can be preaching to the converted – supporting them maybe? Definitely helping to persuade.

  4. As above I share your articles . . . . . And agree with Dr. J. M. . . . the effect of your blog is more extensive than the poll would suggest.

Without a doubt the most usefull source of information for Independence supporters on the internet!
