‘England is sinking while Scotland rises above sea levels’ but Herald finds new worries for SNP Government

That’s no crumbling coastline just a wet esplanade with an eejit reporter parked on it.

Only 10 years ago, the Daily Telegraph told us:

England is sinking while Scotland rises above sea levels, according to new study

England is sinking into the sea while Scotland is rising at such a rate it may counteract the effects of sea level rise due to climate change, according to a new geological map.

The University of Durham looked at levels of land uplift and subsidence in the British Isles since the Ice Age. As the ice retreated 20,000 years ago the release of the enormous weight meant the north slowly tilted up while the south sank down. Scotland is still experiencing this “springboard” effect while southern Ireland, Wales and England continues to sink.

The new study shows that land levels could rise by up to 10cm in some areas of Scotland over the next century, offsetting the effects of sea level rise caused by global warming.

Yet in the Herald today, we read:

SCOTLAND is not prepared for the risks of coastal erosion which is likely to cause far more than the £400m worth of damage to communities first predicted, experts have warned. A Dynamic Coast project looking into the effects on the nation from climate change predicted three years ago that over a fifth of Scotland‘s coastline – over 2000 miles – was at risk of erosion through sea level rises, with threats from flooding to infrastructure, including roads and railways worth £400m by 2050.

I’m sure there are coastal erosion threats around Scotland to be dealt with, but Dynamic Coast is another pressure group in search of funds so might be talking them up. Maybe the University of Durham’s independent researchers could be approached to comment? Go on, Martin Williams, Senior Reporter, ask them?

  1. How can any self respecting newspaper print a headline like that, even if using quotation marks, and still expect to be taken seriously.
Truly appalling. Yes, a car crash maybe more important than global warming for those involved but….. Does it really need even typing out.

  2. Here’s the reason for the disaster at Montrose, the video is over 10 years old, the situation is now much worse, the Port have applied for another dredging licence for this year, help.

  3. So, let me get this right. Water waves on the sea wear away the rocks on the shore? Maybe that’s what makes the sand and shingle on the beaches. Hey, what a discovery!

Makes me wonder if the rain falling from the skies has any effect on the height of our hills and mountains. No, that’s too ridiculous for words. If it did it would surely have made the papers. 🙂
