On Have I Got News for You, last night, Ian Hislop suggested, regarding mummies, that the Glasgow museum curator said it’s disrespectful to have dead bodies lying a round a museum.
Quick as you like , Paul Merton said the above to a wave of laughter from all panellists and from the audience.
I know, ‘Get over yourself Jock. It’s only a joke, Jock. Where’s your sense of humour Jock?
Comedians including Scottish ones have been clinging to a now hopelessly dated 16 year-old image, ignoring the facts:

Glasgow still has the highest level of violent crime in Scotland BUT it now has plummeted to the lowest rate of violent crime of all large UK cities. Evidence? Here it is:
These are city-wide figures
From How safe is your city? in the Complete University Guide for 2025, the Cities with the lowest violent crime:

Bath the lowest at 6.5 attacks per 1 000 population, per year.
The sites with the highest violent crime levels:

Up to 17.6 violent attacks per 1 000 students per year in Leicester!
And in Scotland, after near 20 years of plummeting crime:

Even Glasgow, the highest in Scotland, it’s only 1.2 per 1 000 per year. In Leicester you’re 15 times and in Bath, you’re 5 times, more likely to be attacked.
I haven’t see this reported anywhere revealing the shameful bias of ‘our’ media.

I stopped watching this program due partly to the panelists attitude to Scotland but mainly because of their failure to tackle bigger contraversial issues such as the lack of cover on the Palestine action arrests.

What did Merton say?

Good question – it’s not too clear.

This comment is ‘off topic’ to the blog post about Merton. I was, very unusually for me, tuned into Radio MacPravda this morning. I tuned in just as some academic was giving was ending hiis opinion piece. Then the reporter thanked him and gave his credentials as being from a university in London (not the famous one). So what’s the problem? Using academics from outside Scotland overlooks our 13 universities. Does it not suggest that Radio MacPravda thinks very little of Scotland-based academics? I noticed this trend when I was a regular listener, which is now quite a few years ago. Are any TuS readers keeping a tally?
