Chancellor to unveil £1billion boost to build up to 10,000 new council homes in Budget EXCLUSIVE: The Chancellor is set to announce more than £1billion of new funding for social and affordable housing, taking the total capital investment to more than £40 billion over the next 10 years. The announcement next week by Chancellor John Healey will take the total capital investment in the Social and Affordable Homes Programme to more than £40bn over the next 10 years.1
So, 10 000 council houses in England per year, like 1 000 in Scotland, pro rata, would be?
From Housing statistics quarterly update: new housebuilding and affordable housing supply, we see that Scotland’s local authorities built 1 707 council houses in 2025, down 17 from the previous year but up by nearly 600 on 1 123, ten years before, in 2016.2
So The UK Chancellor plans the equivalent of 1 000 affordable council house per year and Scotland is already building far more, 1 707 in 2025, 70% more?
While we’re here, how many did Scottish Labour built in 2005/2006?
That’d be 6. Yes, SIX. A 300th of the SNP figure for 2025.
