Huge poll confirms that Scots are more content and feel safer in their neighbourhoods than in last days of Labour

Rating of neighbourhood as a place to live by year

From: Scottish Household Survey 2025 findings: Neighbourhoods and Communities published today, the above and:

In 2025, the majority of people (80%) said they felt ‘very’ or ‘fairly safe’ walking alone in their neighbourhood after dark (Table 37), this is a an improvement from 78% in 2024.

These are remarkable results from large sample research. After decades of Tory/Labour austerity moderated only partially by the SNP Government, Scots are increasingly and at a very high level, both satisfied with and feel safe, in their neighbourhoods.

Perhaps, of course, these findings are less remarkable than they seem given the dramatic fall in recorded crime in these last years too. That opinion in a large-sample, gold-standard research survey says the same this as police-reported crime is very encouraging and further dismisses the recent BBC Scotland ‘Welcome to Glasgow’ documentary as tabloid, dishonest, scaremongering.

Also and finally, that repeated opinion polls reveal Scots to be less concerned about crime than those in other parts of the UK, convincingly triangulates the police-recorded data and this research.
