BBC Scotland’s Debate Night indulged in slagging off Glasgow based on no figures whatsoever and one old dear remembering fondly the period from the 1930s to the 1960s when the city and its razor gangs earned its mean reputation well, with violence levels many times those today. One of them, an old guy with lovely hair, compared it with other cities in the UK. See the facts below.

Luckily, at best around 15 000 souls watch this drivel, 2.5% of Glasgow’s population and 0.27% of Scotland’s population. It surely cannot survive the current cull.

Rape?

Is rape an increasing offence and is it higher than the Scottish average. In the last 5 years, that seems to be true though several researchers put the increase down to more victims having the courage to come forward, better policing and historical cases being dealt with.

Is the rate in Glasgow high compared to other parts of the UK?

The population of England & Wales is 61.8m so a rape offence crime figure of 71 667 across high crime and low crime areas, means a ratio per 10 000 people of 11.6! Almost twice the rate in Scotland and 66% higher than in Glasgow.

I can find no evidence of the figures for Liverpool or for any other English city but given their known far higher overall crime rates than other parts of England and that the average is 11.6, we must assume that they are, horrifically, even higher.

Violence?

From How safe is your city? in the Complete University Guide for 2025, the Cities with the lowest violent crime:

Bath the lowest at 6.5 attacks per 1 000 population, per year.

The sites with the highest violent crime levels would have you banning them going there:

Up to 17.6 violent attacks per 1 000 students per year in Leicester!

And in Scotland, after near 20 years of plummeting crime:

Even Glasgow, the highest in Scotland, it’s only 1.2 per 1 000 per year. In Leicester you’re 15 times and in Bath, you’re 5 times, more likely to be attacked.

I haven’t see this reported anywhere revealing the shameful bias of ‘our’ media.
