Scotland’s drug-related deaths peaked in 2020 and the overall trend since then has been down, but within that trend there is some really positive, optimistic detail.

Look at the under 25s more than halved and the under 35s, halved in just 5 years. This is a cultural change as younger people turn away from drugs and, indeed, alcohol, finding alternatives in, especially, social media.

The 35 to 54 group, the largest by far, is in decline, but less sleep. Overdoses and wider damage to internal organs is beginning to cut them down and, in time, they will fall off the figures but it is the older abusers born in Margaret Thatcher’s wasteland of lost hopes for careers and of benefit cuts, the disappointed by New Labour’s lack of substance and ongoing neglect for them. Overdosing with new more powerful drugs and bodies weakened by years of abuse they will very soon disappear as a noticeable statistic.

Assuming these trends persist, Scotland’s drug-related deaths will fall of a cliff and plummet below those, certainly in the UK.

In England & Wales, the age groupings are different but something very different from Scotland is clear.

Total drug-related deaths are still climbing and quite fast but, notably, they are also climbing in the younger groups too, in sharp contrast to the situation in Scotland.

That is dramatic and very positive news which should surely be of interest to a tax-payer funded state broadcaster but it’s clearly not.
