From the Scottish Government yesterday:

More than 500 jobs will be created and supported by 22 new projects funded through the Scottish Government’s Just Transition Fund.

The First Minister officially opened the 2026 funding round, worth £17.5 million, during a visit to Hydrasun, a North East manufacturing firm receiving £1.9 million in support.

Seven commercial projects will receive support, with a further 15 community projects funded through a new dedicated stream, focused on tackling fuel and child poverty, building climate resilience and restoring nature.

The investment will also enable 350 learners per year to further develop their skills with industry aligned training and is expected to leverage a further £10 million in private funding.

How does this compare with the UK Government’s GB Energy project?

A row over jobs at GB Energy has broken out after it was claimed more than a third of employees have refused to relocate to Scotland where the company is headquartered. The organisation, based in Aberdeen, was launched following Labour’s election victory, with Sir Keir Starmer promising it would be led by the “talent and skills of the working people in the Granite City“.

But the number of employees is down massively on the promised “1,000 or more jobs” when the publicly-owned energy company was initially announced, with only 132 workers registered, two years after the General Election. GB Energy currently employs only 53 permanent workers, 31 short-term staff and a further 48 on secondment.
