In an endless trail of tales of single shocking offences, BBC Scotland, fail in their duty to inform the public. There is nothing in the above headlining story of one monster and his victim, to do other than to give nightmares. Most revealing of where BBC Scotland now sits (in the gutter), not one other newspaper operating in Scotland has this story on its front page.

Did Police Scotland play no part and much earlier?

Typically trying to make a ‘bad’ out of it, The Daily Record, 6 years ago had:

Conforming this, in 2024, Ayr MP Allan Dorans, wrote in the international policing journal, Policing Insight:

The Disclosure Scheme for Domestic Abuse in Scotland (DSDAS) has been in operation for eight years, and around 20,000 requests from relatives, friends, colleagues and neighbours of people perceived to be at risk, have resulted in around 12,000 disclosures, a 58% response rate. DSDAS applications can be made in person at a police station, on the phone using 101, or online and take around 45 days for a response.

In 2022-23, 30,139 charges were reported to the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service (COPFS) in Scotland, with a domestic abuse identifier. This was a decrease of 8% compared to the 2021-22 total of 32,776.

The vast majority of charges identified as relating to domestic abuse are prosecuted. An initial decision was made to proceed to court with 94% of charges in 2022-23.

In England and Wales and in Northern Ireland, recorded cases continue to climb, by 14% and 6.5% respectively in the last reported figures. There is now one incident for every 57 people in Northern Ireland, one for every 65 in England and Wales, but only one for every 84 in Scotland.

Rape and other sexual convictions – Scotland leads with 29% and 108% increases in one year despite far fewer incidents

The Guardian‘s Lizzie Dearden, 23 February 2025 had:

UK rape victims are waiting too long for court cases, say top lawyers

There’s no mention of the scandal of low conviction rates.

From Criminal Proceedings in Scotland 2022-23, there was a 63% increase from 2014, in people proceeded against for rape and attempted rape and a 108% increase in convictions for these. https://www.gov.scot/news/criminal-proceedings-in-scotland-2022-23/

Comparisons are not simple but can be done.

Rape offences 2-3 times higher in England & Wales than in Scotland

The police in Scotland recorded 2,529 rape or attempted rape crimes between in 2022/23, compared with 2,498 rape crimes in the previous reporting year.

All things being equal, per head of population with 11 times that, we might expect there to have been 27 819 cases in England & Wales.

There were 68 949, up from 16 038 ten years before. Between two and three times as many.
