Contrary to poorly/if-at-all researched Tory report – Glasgow SNP leader is correct – It is ‘a safe city’ far safer than any in England run for decades by them and their near-equivalents in New Labour

According to the Daily Express today:

The departing SNP leader of Glasgow City Council has insisted that the city is “safe.” This is despite rising reports of rape and violence within the city centre.

From the Sun in October 2025 –  DANGER ZONES Map shows the top 10 UK crime hotspots – do YOU live in the most dangerous area? Newcastle has the lowest crime rate of the ‘UK’ Top Ten at 116 per 1 000 people:

https://www.thesun.co.uk/news/36904645/map-top-10-uk-crime-hotspots/

Westminster in central London had the highest current annual crime rate at 423.2 incidents reported per 1,000 people.

I feel sure if you asked folk in these two places how they think Glasgow would compared, they’d be deeply surprised to hear it’s only 82.9 per 1 000:

Critics will tell you that the SNP can have nothing to do with this but you only have to retort – ‘Imagine if it was the other way round, who’d be to blame?’

Rape?

Is rape an increasing offence and is it higher than the Scottish average. In the last 5 years, that seems to be true though several researchers put the increase down to more victims having the courage to come forward, better policing and historical cases being dealt with.

Is the rate in Glasgow high compared to other parts of the UK?

The population of England & Wales is 61.8m so a rape offence crime figure of 71 667 across high crime and low crime areas, means a ratio per 10 000 people of 11.6! Almost twice the rate in Scotland and 66% higher than in Glasgow.

I can find no evidence of the figures for Liverpool or for any other English city but given their known far higher overall crime rates than other parts of England and that the average is 11.6, we must assume that they are, horrifically, even higher.

Is not that news? Not in BBC Scotland’s Glasgow offices.
