Thanks once more to Frances McKie for alerting us to this from Bloomberg UK today. The key points are:
EDF extended a planned maintenance outage at one of its 57 nuclear reactors after signs of corrosion were found.
The reactor is Gravelines 5 at the Gravelines plant in northern France (near Dunkirk).
The outage will now run until January 25 (of the following year), seven weeks longer than originally planned.
This cuts French nuclear output during a key part of the winter heating season.
This follows dramatic news from Montel News in November 2025 and which further demolishes Scottish Labour’s case for supporting UK Labour’s nuclear energy policy:

“Lost revenue” isn’t good but it’s not as bad as costs.
I noted that Grangemouth was closed because it was “losing” hundreds of millions of pounds. In fact, it was producing less than capacity because of a failure to maintain and use plant. It was a notional loss.
Saving maintenance costs was turned into “lost” income as a pretext for closure and transferring the business to England.
It was well known in the North East that Beeching justified cutting the popular Aberdeen to Ballater line because the entire cost of a new engine was added to one year’s costs thus showing a massive “loss”.
That line would be making a fortune now, specially if it was extended to Perth as originally planned. That plan was kyboshed by Queen Victoria who didn’t want trains to chuff past Balmoral.
So many union dividends!
