There were 25,605 operations planned to take place across NHS Scotland. This is 0.2% lower (-39) than the number planned in July 2025 (25,644). However, over the course of the last 12 months, from August 2025 to July 2026 (308,311), there was a 6.2% increase (+18,082) compared to the previous 12 months (290,229). This is consistent with the trend of generally increasing numbers of planned operations since March 2021. The last 12 months of planned operations is still 7.7% lower (25,767) than the 12-month period immediately prior to March 2020 when the Covid pandemic began to affect planned operations.

Of all planned operations during July 2026 in NHS Scotland, 838 (3.3%) were cancelled the day before or on the day of treatment by the hospital for clinical reasons, 746 (2.9%) by the patient, 570 (2.2%) by the hospital due to capacity or non-clinical reasons, and 60 (0.2%) for other reasons.

So, almost 98% (97.8%) of 25 605 operations, in one month, going back at least tow years, could and would have been done on time, had not patients or medics cancelled 6.25% in total for non-capacity reasons.

So, a 6.2% increase in demand in the last year, a consistent level of of capacity-caused cancellations, of between only 2 to 3% and steady climb despite increasing demand to pre-Pandemic levels.
