“When I said I was going to do politics differently, I meant it”.
Well so far a lot of people are seeing Burnham as being not so “different” from the one that he replaced, indeed Burnham is being seen by many people as being nowt more than a ‘Continuity Starmer’.
The Guardian reported on 26 August this year that:
“Burnham drops support for political funding cap aimed at curbing mega-donors” .
Now that is a biggie , as in a betrayal, or is it a U-turn (similar also to the far too many U-turns we previously witnessed with Keir Starmer as the previous PM).
Paul Holden the investigative Journalist and author of the book “Fraud” posted this on 26 August in respect to that Guardian article:
“This is being briefed as if it’s unions opposing donations caps and that’s why Burnham has caved on his promises to cap political donations at £500k.”
“But we’ve literally JUST SEEN Burnham’s donations disclosures, which are not even mentioned in this article. They show Burnham getting a pittance from unions but substantial donations from Gary Lubner (£25k) and **Lord Sainsbury (over £160k) to support his Labour leadership bid”. (** see below for where Burnham visited).
“Lubner and Sainsbury were two of the biggest previous funders of Labour Together and the Starmer projects, who both personally made donations in the millions to Labour Together and/or the Labour Party”
“Burnham made his promise to cap donations at £500k to an activist in May this year. And then in June and July he gets bankrolled by the types of mega-donors who would be impacted by a donations cap, limiting their ability to influence politics”
“Then he drops the proposals that would impact on his personal donors. Deeply disappointing and really hard not to join these dots”.
(Paul Holden wrote ‘Fraud’ , which was an “exposé on the Labour Party files that laid bare the intrigues, stratagems, and deceits that helped deliver Sir Keir Starmer to Downing Street. Holden showed how Keir Starmer has been the frontman for a ruthless, right-wing political project headed by Morgan McSweeney, the -now former- chief of staff in Number 10”).
So then guess where Andy Burnham was on 27 August this year to promote his government’s ‘national’ drive to tackle youth unemployment (national being for England) – he was in a ** Sainsbury ** store in London.
Now was that to also promote Sainsbury’s ?
Because Sadiq Khan was also there with Burnham and as the Mayor of London Khan posted this on Facebook:
“We’re closing the gap between the classroom and the workplace.
I welcome the Prime Minister’s plans to devolve power to London to allow us to shape high-quality technical and vocational education from the age of 14.
More businesses should follow Sainsbury’s lead by offering meaningful work experience, mentoring, apprenticeships and entry-level jobs”.
So “Burnham formerly making a promise to cap donations at £500k to an activist in May this year” .
However :
“Records show that Burnham received donations worth more than £325,000 in the three months before he entered No 10, he has now opted not to back amendments to the elections bill which would cap the amount a person or an organisation can give in a single donation, according to government sources”.
A former donations that he had received included that donation from Lord Sainsbury .
So yes I think I agree with Paul Holden that , on this one , we can indeed join the dots.
I think we can also conclude that (very much) in this instance with this (betrayal) aka U-turn then Burnham has most decidedly chosen not to “do politics differently” .
Indeed predictably and also depressingly Burnham has shown himself to be no “different” from all of the others who came before him.
As in all of the various UK PM’s from different parties.
What with Burnham now clearly “doing politics” in the exact same way that we all formerly witnessed and so then had to endure via all of the previous various duds or “Frauds” who came before him.
Indeed it’s hard to find any distinction between him and what we had before , as in all of the other now former UK PM’s.
The Labour party where “Change” means the same old same old dressed up to make it look as if it was something new…..more like the same ideas and same policies all borrowed (from the Tories) to then end up (for voters as seeming to be) the exact same ideas and policies that all still look distinctly way too Blue.
