Update – If Glasgow IS so violent why IS it a far, far, safer city for your bairns to attend university in than any in England even Bath or Cambridge?

Update - Thanks to those commenting especially stewartb for clarifying that these are city-wide figures and not just those for campus areas.

From How safe is your city? in the Complete University Guide for 2025, the Cities with the lowest violent crime:

Bath the lowest at 6.5 attacks per 1 000 population, per year.

The sites with the highest violent crime levels would have you banning them going there:

Up to 17.6 violent attacks per 1 000 students per year in Leicester!

And in Scotland, after near 20 years of plummeting crime:

Even Glasgow, the highest in Scotland, it’s only 1.2 per 1 000 per year. In Leicester you’re 15 times and in Bath, you’re 5 times, more likely to be attacked.

I haven’t see this reported anywhere revealing the shameful bias of ‘our’ media.

  1. To be clearer …. these stats are for the CITIES in which the campuses are located, not just for the campuses themselves. Makes the favourable stats for Scotland compared to cities elsewhere in the UK even more notable.

    if reversed, this would lead a BBC Scotland news report!

        The link in the main blog post is to this: ‘How safe is your city? – Feeling safe and secure is crucial for enjoying university. See how safe university towns and cities are to help you finalise where to study’ (dated 3 March 2026)

        This states in the introduction: ‘If you are a student who is moving to university, you’ll want to know whether the town or city you are moving to is a safe place to live in the UK.’ (my emphasis)

        It reports on – and tabulates – statistics on rates of those crimes most likely to impact students in the various UK towns and cities which host a university. These statistics are available for town/city locations across the whole of the UK as the tables demonstrate.

        The same source has in the past also published this: ‘Crime rates in university cities and towns – Student safety is important. Here are the rates for crimes most likely to affect students in the areas they live during university term time. (dated 1 Sep 2025).

        By way of contrast, this 2025 report tabulates crime statistics by university institution rather than by host town/city.

        It explains: ‘The figures in the table are the weighted average crime rates per thousand population, for the postcode sectors where students at the higher education provider are living. Only postcode sectors where students live in rented or provider-maintained accommodation are included. The crimes included are those most relevant to students.‘

        Of significance for the distinction between crime rates on campus and crime rates for host towns/cities, the 2025 report notes crucially: ‘Comparable data are not available for Scotland or Northern Ireland.’

        The foregoing takes at face what the authors of the University Guide have written about the statistical evidence. And of course journalistic output isn’t always the clearest!
