The Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Station in southeastern Ukraine is the largest nuclear power plant in Europe and among the 10 largest in the world. It has been under Russian control since 2022. It was built by the Soviet Union near the city of Enerhodar, on the southern shore of the Kakhovka Reservoir on the Dnieper river. From 1996 to 2022, it was operated by Energoatom, which operates the other three nuclear power stations in Ukraine.

The plant has six VVER-1000 pressurized light water nuclear reactors (PWR), each fueled with ²³⁵U (LEU)^[2] and generating 950 MW_e, for a total power output of 5,700 MW_e.^[3] The first five were successively brought online between 1985 and 1989, and the sixth was added in 1995. In 2020, the plant generated nearly half of the country’s electricity derived from nuclear power,^[4] and more than a fifth of total electricity generated in Ukraine.^[5] The Zaporizhzhia thermal power station is nearby.

On 4 March 2022, days into the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Russian forces seized both the nuclear and thermal power stations.^[6][7][8][9] As of 12 March 2022, the Russian company Rosatom claimed control over the plant.^[1]

Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Plant Lost External Power Twice, Raising Nuclear Safety Risks – On Saturday, August 8, the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant lost its external power supply twice due to actions by the occupiers who have temporarily seized the facility.

The company emphasized that the incident once again demonstrates the plant’s vulnerability under occupation and the risks to nuclear and radiation safety in the event of disruptions to the standard power supply configuration.

Add this to the health risks for workers and those living nearby, the astronomic costs and timescale of clear-up, the much higher than wind unit generation costs, the risk from wildfires, the security risks from domestic terrorism and Scottish Labour’s support beggars belief.

That would never happen in Scotland? The Royal Navy and/or the RAF would prevent any attacks on a Scottish nuclear power station? What Royal Navy? What RAF defence is there against a 1 000 drone attack of the kind we see every week in Ukraine?
