In reporting the case of Alan Greer ‘a police officer who took his own life in May was a violent rapist who carried out attacks and attempted murders of women over at least 14 years, BBC Reporting Scotland reported last night that comparisons with the Met officer Wayne Couzens ,who raped and murdered Sarah Everard in in 2021, were ‘emerging‘ and were ‘inevitable.’

Neither Sky nor STV see the above ’emerging’ or ‘inevitability.’ They clearly did not have a prior agenda to imagine it nor to want it.

Where did the comparison ’emerge’ from?

A source close to the investigation told the BBC: “It feels a bit like this could be Police Scotland’s Wayne Couzens moment.”

Before claiming the above did interviewer Mark Daly get a hint of this in his interview with a senior police officer familiar with the case?

She clearly says there is nothing to suggest there have been any missed opportunities over the years to stop him. We have already heard that his family and colleagues had been ‘oblivious to his violent double life’ and that the first report by a victim only came in ‘late last year.’ Yet you can see where Daly is hoping to go.

The comparison will emerge inevitably because BBC Scotland will make sure it does and they have all the anonymous sources they want to imagine it for you.

Why do they want this so much?

Police Scotland is the SNP’s ‘baby.‘ They created it in 2013, against opposition from the Lib Dems, Cosla, the Police Federation and Jack McConnell‘s thinktank Reform Scotland. So, any perceived failures by Police Scotland can be quickly laid at the door of the SNP Government and ministers then challenged.

Why is the comparison utterly incoherent?

Wayne Couzens had a long track record of abusive behaviour and of language toward women, over 15 years, among colleagues and on file. The Met chose to ignore these.

Greer had no track record of abusive behaviours or of language toward women, among colleagues or on file. Police Scotland did not know a thing until late last year.
