Truth be told even Scotland’s ‘most dangerous’ place is less so than 27 of them in England and far less so than 18 of them

The Daily Record yesterday had the above and:

Scotland’s “most dangerous” areas have been named as part of a new list put together by security experts, with one of the country’s major cities placing first. The city was described by the experts as having “startling figures across the board”, with overall crimes figures rising by more than 5 per cent.

On Tuesday, July 7, ProFM Group shared a roundup of Scotland’s 15 most dangerous destinations using official data from the Scottish Government Data Repository. The experts expressed this as a rate of the number of crimes per 10,000 residents, which is the official methodology of the Scottish Government.

According to ProFM Group, the area of Scotland with the highest crime rate is Glasgow City, with an overall crime rate of 1,431 crimes per 10,000 residents. The experts state that overall crime figures in Scotland’s biggest city have increased by 5.3 per cent compared to last year.

Not for the first time, the Daily Record seeks to distort the lived reality of its readers, to make them anxious and, as a consequence, to push them to the right in voting behaviour.

Curiously, given their use of the word ‘dangerous’ they make no mention of violent crimes, just the overall figure including fraud, shoplifting and so on.

What is the top five? It’s Glasgow, Dundee, West Dunbartonshire, Dumfries and Galloway Edinburgh.

So, what’s the rate at the top? They claim it’s Glasgow with 1 431 crimes per 10 000 residents.

Based on police reporting for 2025/2026, checked by government statisticians and published for scrutiny, the figure should be 849, up from 806 the previous year but down from 899 ten years before. https://www.gov.scot/publications/recorded-crime-scotland-2025-26/documents/

How did ProFM get that much higher figure? They claim to have used https://statistics.gov.scot/home requiring great effort and skill rather than just directly going to the easier-to-use. https://www.gov.scot/publications/recorded-crime-scotland-2025-26/documents/ Either way, they have used a wrong and badly misleading set of data.

Back to Scotland ‘dangerous’ places for tourists. Do any other parts of the UK have a higher overall crime rate per 10 000?

Well, there are these 18:

There are another 9, closer to but still above, Glasgow’s 849:
