My father was captured after the fall of St Valery en Caux on 12th June 1940. The 51st Highland Regiment were abandoned there to fight Rommel’s panzers with depleted weapons and no hope of rescue from the sea.
During the bombardment they listened to radio London’s broadcast on 10th June 1940 announcing that the last of the British troops had just been evacuated from Dunkirk.
Five years in a POW camp in Bavaria and Poland followed.
“No great mischief if they fall” was the comment by General Wolfe as he cleared up after Culloden and wrote to the Prime Minister suggesting the Highlanders would make excellent troops to fight the French in Canada being rugged and expendable.
There is nothing new about the disdain the UK shows Scottish people.

Spot on. However, it was quickly forgotten (or hushed up) then and very little remains online to educate future generations.
