As yet another privatised water company in England poisons its customers, BBC Scotland has little to say about Scotland’s water.
Here’s why:
The quality of public drinking water supplies in Scotland remains amongst the highest in the world, a report has found. In its annual report published today, the Drinking Water Quality Regulator for Scotland said that 99.91 per cent of samples passed stringent water quality tests. https://www.studycountry.com/wiki/where-does-scotland-rank-in-tap-water
The Drinking Water Quality Regulator report, covering drinking water quality in Scotland during 2023, states that a total of 272,017 regulatory tests were carried out on Scotland’s drinking water last year. Of those tests on samples taken to represent quality at consumers’ taps, 99.88% met the required standards. https://smartwatermagazine.com/news/scottish-government/scotlands-tap-water-among-worlds-best-investment-needed-maintain-standards

The quality of Scottish Water is simply one of a long line of Scottish Public Services which are superior to those of England …but the UK /English media either are ignorant of this or , more likely , will not publicise it for fear of appearing to suggest that the SNP Government is actually very competent .
In all the furore about the poor state of the privatised English Water Companies I have rarely heard any comparison with nationalised Scottish Water when the media is hand wringing and seeking a solution .

The media narrative claiming the UK has a uniformly “broken water system” completely glosses over the major structural and performance differences between Scotland and England. Broad reporting often bundles the entire UK together, ignoring that Scotland’s publicly owned model delivers 99.92% drinking water compliance—a tier of consistent quality that privatised English water companies have completely failed to match.
The political spin and media over-hyping reached a boiling point when UK Government ministers tried to publicly claim Scotland’s water was dirtier than England’s. This triggered an official investigation by the UK Statistics Authority. The independent watchdog strictly intervened, ruling that these political claims were inaccurate, lacked evidence, and actively risked “misleading the public”. Their data verified that Scotland’s surface waters and overall water quality rank fundamentally higher than England’s.
