The Herald has today:
John Swinney is facing mounting pressure over his leadership, to compensate SNP supporters and to answer “difficult questions” after Peter Murrell admitted embezzling more than £400,000 from the party over a 12-year period.
Opposition politicians, former SNP figures and campaigners said the guilty plea had raised fresh questions for the First Minister and renewed calls for donors whose money was misused to be refunded.
Grok – ‘Has any current member of the SNP been reported calling for John Swinney to resign or for the money referred to in the Murrell case to be refunded?‘
Easy, John, I only thought for 5 seconds:
No, there are no reports of any current SNP MSP, MP, or active party officeholder publicly calling for John Swinney to resign or for the SNP to refund the money embezzled by Peter Murrell.
Key details from today’s events (May 25, 2026):
- Peter Murrell (former SNP CEO and Nicola Sturgeon’s estranged husband) pleaded guilty to embezzling over £400,000 from the SNP. He used the funds for personal items like a motorhome, cars, and jewelry.
- John Swinney held a press conference, expressed being “horrified,” “gutted,” and “betrayed,” and apologised to SNP members whose donations were affected. The SNP positions itself as a victim of the crime.
On resignation calls:
- Joanna Cherry (former SNP MP) has publicly called for Swinney to resign and be replaced (e.g., by Stephen Flynn), saying the party needs to “break with the past.” However, she left the SNP in late 2025 and is no longer a member or elected representative.
- Other past figures (e.g., Jim Sillars) have made similar calls in the past or now, but these are not current members.
- No current SNP MPs, MSPs, or senior officeholders have been reported making such calls in the coverage. https://www.bbc.com/news/live/cddp5gm0155t
On refunds:
- Swinney and the SNP have stated they will not be offering refunds. The money is considered stolen from the party, and they say current donations will support party aims. scottishdailyexpress.co.uk
- Calls for refunds or compensation have come from opposition politicians, campaigners (e.g., Sean Clerkin, whose complaint helped trigger the investigation), and some former SNP figures — but not from serving SNP elected members. https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2026/may/25/peter-murrell-pleads-guilty-embezzlement-snp-scottish-national-party
This story is breaking today, so more internal reactions could emerge, but based on current reporting, no serving SNP figures have gone public with demands for Swinney’s resignation or refunds. The party leadership is emphasising unity and portraying the SNP as the victim while focusing on moving forward.

How many demands were made for Rishi Sunak’s resignation when he wrote off over £4 billion of PPE fraud as too difficult for the police to investigate?
It will be interesting to see how much of the £2 million spent by Police Scotland was on investigating the years between 2010 and 2017 when the appeal for funds was made and how many of the charges relate to that period
Should anything prior to 2017 not have been left for the SNP to deal with as an internal matter?

The Herald is desperately trying to build pressure on John Swinney. Fortunately, you are one of the few people who still reads the foul, lying rag (saving the rest of us the pain). Feel for the late Ian Bell, whose shroud has become twisted from his turning in his grave at the fate of a once great publication.

I heard James Cook of BBC Scotland asking about returning the money. I would never in a million years have thought that he donated to the SNP.
Mind you, was it his money or BBC Scotland’s money he was using 🙂

£40,000 a year expenses for 10 years. The biggest political party in the UK.
The unionist parties have spent more than that amount. Taxpayers money. Wasted £Billions.
Did Peter Murrell plead guilty because of the enormous legal fees.
Alex Salmond was left with no money. Still has not got the £3Million being sued from the Scottish Gov.

We have been told that this case is about the embezzlment of money donated by SNP members and the public for the “Indyref2” campaign.
The appeal was made in 2017 so how can it relate to goods bought in 2010?
