NHS Highland director reveals child poverty in her previous Wales responsibility is predicted to be a shocking nearly 60% higher

are living in poverty.

BBC Scotland’s wee insert in BBC Breakfast this morning is announcing the above and, on their website:

Public health director Jennifer Davies said that of its 12,834 under-fives, almost 22% lived in relative poverty.

In a new report, Davies said the “sheer geographic scale” of the area – which covers the Highlands and Argyll and Bute – posed challenges in reaching health services for some families.

She said they could benefit from greater availability of housing, improved transport links and investment in play spaces.

Davies said support for families should also be strengthened to maximise access to childcare, healthy foods and income benefits.

Where did Davies come from?

Prior to joining NHS Highland, Jennifer was the Acting Executive Director of Public Health at Swansea Bay Health Board in South Wales, where she also held the role of Deputy Director of Public Health since 2022.

How successful had she and her colleagues in Wales been?

The above from the  Joseph Rowntree Foundation is shocking. That in only Scotland will child poverty have reduced by the next Westminster election in 2029, is deep condemnation of the governments in the other three nations. What this means is that child poverty in Wales will be 57.8% higher and, in England, it will 44.5% higher, than in Scotland.

Remember that these percentage differences mean that more than a million out of the current total of nearly 4 million in England and more than 100 000 out of the quarter of a million in Wales, could be taken out of poverty if SNP policies were applied there – especially the Child Payment of £27.15 per child per week, lower rents, lower council tax, free bus fares, free prescriptions, free tuition and others.

  1. Then why do we allow unionists in our Parliament to degrade Scotland’s efforts? Why are they given free reign to shout loudly and often about our government’s perceived failures when the government THEY support is no better and in some cases, much worse?

The Scottish Government MUST, in this coming term of office, take every lie, every miscalculation and every exaggeration and disprove them in public. Otherwise they will be repeated on SM until they become some form of truth.

No more of this mamby pamby “there is more to be done”. They are the ones who support WM. It’s their supporters who trend on X with #close Holyrood. Get them telt.
