After nearly 20 years of SNP Governments most Scots no longer so desperate for a fag as they were under Jack McConnell

From Smoking attributable hospital admissions and deaths Scotland 2024 published today:

There were an estimated 1,107 smoking‑attributable hospital admissions per 100,000 population (38,675 admissions). This is a 36% decrease since 2008 (1,735 per 100,000). There were an estimated 204 smoking‑attributable deaths per 100,000 population (7,085 deaths). This is a 39% decrease since 2008 (334 per 100,000).

These are massive improvements which must be thanks to the SNP because if more folk were smoking and dying it would be widely blamed on them.

  1. I think you are being a bit unfair to the Labour/LibDem Scottish Executive. They started the ball rolling on this pathway to a reduction in smoking. With something so long established such as smoking the reduction in those smoking takes time and does not result from a single step/policy but builds from a series of steps each of which addresses some aspect and of the behaviour that makes people smoke.

In 2002 the Scottish Executive started the ball rolling with regulations restricting point of sale. Then in 2006 the ban on smoking in enclosed public spaces came into effect. To their credit the SNP supported this if I remember correctly. The SNP took over in Holyrood in 2007 so not long enough to see the ban having a big effect on reducing smoking.

The Scottish Gov has added bits and pieces of legislation during its time in office that have made smoking less acceptable thus continuing/reinforcing the reduction in smoking.

A timescale is given in this link
