I’ve had to correct the above because while governments and top politicians know to call it the UK, hardly anyone else from Portugal to Bulgaria does. After centuries of the UK’s elites and those Celts co-opted to it, self-referring to it as ‘England’, that’s what 99% of Europeans and beyond call it. Protests against the UK in Tehran chant against ‘Inglesi’.
Here are typical examples:
- French: Angleterre
- German: England
- Spanish: Inglaterra
- Italian: Inghilterra
- Dutch: Engeland
- Polish: Anglia
- Portuguese: Inglaterra
- Swedish: England
- Finnish: Englanti
- Greek: Αγγλία (Anglía)
- Many others: Anglia / Angliya / similar variants (from “Angle” root).

So, the voters see this mad eccentric singing for the so-called UK and they think, straight-off, ‘English, no votes for you.’
Why? They’ve learned to hate England.
Here’s are some reasons:
- 1985 European Cup Final – Heysel Stadium Disaster
Heysel Stadium disaster
Before the final between Liverpool F.C. and Juventus F.C. in Brussels, crowd violence and a stadium wall collapse caused 39 deaths, mostly Juventus fans. English clubs were subsequently banned from European competition for five years. - Euro 1988 Disorder in West Germany
UEFA Euro 1988
England supporters were involved in clashes with police and rival fans in cities including Düsseldorf and Stuttgart. - 1990 World Cup Violence in Italy
1990 FIFA World Cup
Disturbances involving England fans occurred in Cagliari and other host cities, leading to arrests and heightened security concerns around hooliganism. - Euro 1998 Riots in Marseille
UEFA Euro 1996 and later the 1998 FIFA World Cup saw major disorder.
The Marseille violence in particular became infamous after England fans clashed with local youths and police in Marseille before the England vs Tunisia match. - Charleroi Trouble at Euro 2000
UEFA Euro 2000
England supporters caused extensive disorder in Charleroi, including vandalism and clashes with riot police. Hundreds were detained. - World Cup 2006 Clashes in Germany
2006 FIFA World Cup
Incidents involving England fans happened in Stuttgart and Baden-Baden, though violence was less severe than in earlier decades. - Euro 2016 Marseille Violence
UEFA Euro 2016
Serious fighting broke out between England supporters, Russian fans, and police in Marseille before England vs Russia. The scenes drew global attention. - Euro 2020 Final Disorder (London-focused but international attention)
UEFA Euro 2020 Final
While mainly in London rather than continental Europe, the unrest around Wembley — ticketless fans storming barriers and clashes with police — became one of the biggest modern incidents linked to England football crowds.
Here are some more:
Harfleur to Hamburg: Five Centuries of English and British Violence in Europe – Britain has historically been seen as an upholder of international norms, at least in its relations with western powers. This has often been contrasted with the violence perpetrated in colonial contexts on other continents. What is often missed, however, is the extent to which the state with its capital in London—first England, then Great Britain—inflicted extreme violence on its European neighbors, even when still using the rhetoric of neighborliness and friendship. This book comprises eleven case-studies of Anglo-British strategic violence, from the siege of Harfleur in 1415 to the fire-bombing of Hamburg in 1943. Chapters examine actions that were top-down and directed, and perpetrated for specific geopolitical reasons—many of them at, or well beyond, the bounds of what was sanctioned by prevailing international norms at the time.

If you consider yourself ‘exceptional’ – think, ‘Rule Britannia’, ‘There will always be an England,’ ‘There is some corner of a foreign field, that is forever England’, ‘wogs begin at Calais’ etc – then the normal rules of conduct do not apply, because you are dealing with ‘lesser breeds’ who do not behave as gentlemen do.
However, Scots wanting to rule their own country is deemed ‘exceptionalISM’, and that, per se, is a BAD thing. The fact that Scots are having this ‘exceptionalism’ imposed on them by an ‘exceptional’ people, is not perceived as mendacious or contradictory. It is just a jibe, which the ‘Scottish’ media repeat without question. Exceptionalism does not apply to the members of the ‘Scottish’ media, because they are ‘unionists’ and accepted conditionally, but somewhat condescendingly, by the ‘exceptional’ people.

Anybody else remember the 1974 World Cup in Germany when they drove all the team buses through central Berlin, each with the competing country’s name in huge letters along the side, and the Scottish commentators’ visible shock while vox-popping live on teatime news to realise that hardly anybody in Berlin knew who Schottland was?
I had the exact same thing happen to me in Cuba. When asked if I was English said no, I’m from Scotland. Y’know that blank look Dougal gives Father Ted?
I eventually said, “Braveheart… Freedom!”😃
He laughed and said, “yes, all Cubans love that movie.”
“Aye,” I said, “Scotland.”
And there it was, that Father Dougal look again.
The world is only beginning to know Scotland again.

Compare and constant to the behaviour of the Scottish fans at Germany 2024 when the Germans liked the Scottish fans so much that thousands of them were booking holidays to Scotland.

“Eurovision – When they see ‘United Kingdom’ they think ‘ENGLAND’”
Not just Eurovision though is it ?
Take Rupert Lowe , an English Nationalist , who has now created a new party that he has called ‘Restore Britain‘.
Reading his many daily posts on ‘X’ you will see how often he sees England and English as the same as Britain and Britishness , as for him there seems to be no distinction between the two.
Yesterday he wrote (yet another) long post about Councils , Reform UK ones, “spending hundreds of thousands of pounds on foreign language translation”
He concluded his post in stating this:
“Let me be clear about Restore Britain’s position. We would scrap ALL foreign language translation/interpretation in the public sector. You live in England, you speak English. End of story. There is finally a political party willing to do what needs to be done. Restore Britain“.
So surely if it’s Restore Britain then why does he not write ‘ You live in Britain, you speak English‘ ?
Rupert Lowe , who was suspended by Reform UK as one of their elected MP’s, was one of the guest speakers at an event hosted by The Spectator in July 2025 that was called “How to save England”.
So not ‘How to save Britain’ or “restore” it or “reform” it , just “How to save England”.
The other guest speakers were Danny Kruger (who was still a Tory then before he defected to Reform UK) , Thomas Skinner an ex BBC Apprentice contestant and a Strictly Come Dancing contestant (now he is a Reform UK member as from January 2026) and also James Orr who, as from February 2026, became the Head of policy for Reform UK and he is also a senior adviser to Nigel Farage.
Lowe’s spoken contribution included an argument where he said that “the England of the past has been disregarded” and that the country needs a, “return to a lifestyle” that “emphasises traditional values”.
He also advocated for strict, “pro-English” policies. He then argued for a “Focus on ‘Patriotism”, where he argued for a “revival of national pride”, challenging the “perceived hesitancy of mainstream politicians” (in both Labour and Conservative parties) to openly “defend English identity”.
So it’s really a bit of a farce (lie) for Lowe to call his party Restore Britain when in reality the only country he obviously cares about is England , yet I am sure that he too, as an English politician, is also someone who sees England as being synonymous with Britain.
Also his party is called Restore Britain and so it too is also a party that seeks election within the UK State, so then if they were ever elected as a UK government they would not just be governing England , but through reserved powers they would also be governing the whole of the UK State. So why then would their duty be to “defend English identity” as a way to see a “revival of National pride” ?
Lowe is someone who also wants to see the parliament at Holyrood abolished (so then does he also want all of the other devolved parliaments to be abolished as well, including NI’s assembly ?) as he wants our nation(s) to all be totally controlled by WM , the English parliament , once again.
Now that might appeal to some within Scotland who say that they are “proud” to be Scottish but apparently it really seems that they are more “proud” to be British (English), but that being the case would they also then seek to “defend English identity” , while simultaneously seeking to suppress any pride or sense of identity in anyone in Scotland defending their Scottish identity (first and foremost)?
On the plus side it does seem that Lowe’s party will help split the right wing vote in subsequent elections, which will then hurt Reform UK, so a win win for us who do not ever want an even more right wing English Nationalist party to govern the UK, bad enough when we had both Labour and the Tories doing it as UK governments……in them both conflating Britain with England and both of them mostly defending , celebrating and so then investing in England .
Maybe best Scotland should start to prepare , and so set in motion, a path for us to depart from this disunited UK State that has descended into a hate filled corrupt State, one that is seeking to only promote, support , and so defend only one nation within it, and we all know what nation that is. (i.e. the nation who are the King makers at WM elections , who , through having a majority of allocated constituency seats, always then get to decide who governs the UK State at a UK government level).
