Shooting ourselves in the foot – how a fringe group handed Labour an SNP seat in the fight against Reform UK

There’s the result for the ‘shock’ Labour win over the SNP in the Western Isles.

BBC Scotland seem not to publishing the actual numbers, the raw data, though they do mention that, the winner:

MacKinnon, who works in community development and manages a community-owned trust in Carloway on Lewis, won by 154 votes.

Only 154?

I can’t help but wonder how many voted for Kenny Mackenzie of the Alliance to Liberate Scotland?

It was 159!

Am I alone in being frankly p****d off by that?

  1. No, you are not alone. I thought there were too many tiny parties taking votes away from the main contenders especially if they actually do want Scotland to be free from Westminster.
I feel time is running out especially with the rise of Reform. Nigel Farage as PM will cause untold damage.
SNP need to rebut the negativity from BBC, etc, try to educate people and encourage them to vote although how you change the minds of those who “always vote Labour because my father, grandfather, etc always voted for them” is a bit of a task. A blind man running for a bus could see through Sarwar and Baillie’s lies and don’t start me on Starmer😬

  2. Swinney’s policy of both votes let Reform in and he was told and henknew but he didnit anyway. Now the unionists have a single entity to follow which will be promoted by the BBC

  3. Are they an alliance to liberate Scotland from the SNP ?

So in this instance they have done their bit in helping a pro UK party, Labour, to win the seat and so then help hinder the cause of independence.

One of the things they state on their website is their mission to fight for “uniting pro independence candidates across Scotland under a single purpose, to end the Union and begin the rebirth of a free Scottish state”.

Well their mission failed in this constituency where they chose not to unite but instead they chose to contest against another “pro independence candidate” (SNP one) that resulted in them, ATLS, helping to hand the seat to a party (Labour) whose mission it is to try to maintain the Union and so destroy any hope or chance of there ever being a free Scottish State.

I suspect they may see this as half a victory in that they did their bit to stop the SNP winning the seat , though it does then leave them looking somewhat ridiculous, what with votes for them in this constituency helping to gain this seat for the Labour party, so not so much liberation for Scotland but more a case of their doing their bit to try to keep Scotland imprisoned in the UK State , in them aiding a pro UK party to gain a seat from the SNP.

So basically vote for ATLS and you may just get Labour (or another pro UK party) , who knew , well they, ATLS , must have known in this case , surely.

    1. They handed the seat to Labour by standing a candidate in the constituency vote. They seem to have gone quiet having been flooding pro indy blogs with comments
demanding people vote for them because SNP according to them doesn’t want independence, good job folks, not!!

  4. John, While I greatly admire your work with Talking Up Scotland, your blind support for the present-day SNP does upset me. Swinney and Co have no real interest in Independence; the SNP is now a pro-devolution party, their main focus, keeping their noses in the trough.

None of the Unionist parties will EVER AGAIN allow a Section 30 Order and a referendum – we will NEVER achieve Independence via this route.

There is greater likelihood of Independence via the ATLS route.

    1. Thanks Matthew

I left the SNP for the Scottish Socialists two years ago over Angus Robertson and the Israelis.

I have strongly attacked Nicola Sturgeon’s fondness for Hilary Clinton and acceptance of US foreign policy imperatives.

Your accusation of ‘blind support’ is unjustified.

I’m currently with the current SNP leadership because I don’t agree with your blind acceptance of the frankly insignificant ATLS campaign.

This is a long game and events such as foreign wars and England’s drift to the right will create the conditions for history to happen to us, whatever the SNP do.

Ireland had no electoral majority for independence. WW 1 happened to them.

    2. Hmm, John Swinney I’m sure wants independence for Scotland. He eventually did make statements in lead up to the election about independence. I suspect he was being very cautious, because much as many people really like and benefit from SNP socially responsible policies, still many are not convinced about independence, yet.
Add to that the loss of some SNP seats, grr, and so the SNP have to work out a strategy. Just be glad the British nationalists did not win enough seats to take control of Scotland, if anything we should be livid at the idiots who voted for parties like ‘reform’. A dangerous extreme right wing party that is taking over England. Scary indeed.
Let’s support SNP and I would hope the Scottish Greens to work on securing independence for Scotland. It’s going to be tough, England’s Labour party will possibly attempt to block even more investment into Scotland and shut down more of Scotland’s industry. No doubt they will make even more cuts to the crumbs they send to Scotland once they’ve taken Scotland’s vast resources wealth. The English government will do everything they can to keep their gravy train, ie Scotland, shackled, so feel free to get onboard and help Scotland escape.
      Have a lovely day.
