Some time ago, a Mull ferry-user rep urged CalMac to get out in the world and learn from other ferry services.
This summer travellers to Arran from Ardrossan (19nm) can expect to pay £10.60 return on foot and, in a car, £53, regardless of the time of day or day of the week. Islanders can plan ahead knowing they will not be hit by sharp hikes if they must travel at peak times.
Travellers to Canada this summer, on the similar Tsawwassen–Southern Gulf Islands route (18-25nm depending on stops) will pay the equivalent of £30 and £140.
There’s a wee information-gathering trip for him.

The Southampton Daily Echo has reported on issues reliability with Wightlink and Red Funnel ferries to the Isle of Wight. Reading the paper waiting for a cruise, either last year or the year before it was reporting consumers up in arms at one of these firm’s proposal to borrow £600 million. £300 million for maintenance, replacements and £300 million for shareholders.
As this was along with paying 4 times the cost of CalMac for journeys, not happy campers.
Using UK Govt accounting, I can confirm that the Arran ferries are within budget. With an investment of £400 million to build them, this generates 2.4 times in economic activity so almost £1 billion. HMRC average take is 30.7% or £300 million. Hence the amount spent is £97 million.
