Herald’s ill-informed acceptance of the nuclear industry’s sums makes their claim of ‘trusted journalism’ laughable

The Herald today has the above headline and, in the text, this basis for it:

Is it true? No, the NIA has a clear agenda to promote nuclear energy regardless of the facts.

Prices for Scottish consumers [electricity and gas] are driven by international gas prices, worsened by the war in Ukraine and despite the fact that Scotland is a net exporter of gas.

The NIA’s calculations are industry-produced and though they plausibly make a case for nuclear stabilising the system during volatile periods, they do not prove the reverse that the absence of more nuclear is the reason for recent increases.

The Herald, once more, has a banner, below, leaving us weak with laughter.

  1. Scotland in surplus in fuel and energy, Scottish wind power used in the UK.
Scotland pays more as part of the UK because of Westminster policy. Scotland nearer the source should pay less, for parity.

Scotland is the best place for renewables. Wind, wave, solar, water, hydro. Scotland is covered with coal with CCS. Westminster refused to fund CCS at Longannet Fife. Refused CCS gas project at Peterhead. Refused a £1.5Billion investment in renewables.

Westminster borrowed Chinese money to fund Hickley Poiht years late and over budget. HS2 years late and over budget.

Labour refused two tidal projects, one at the Humber. £10Billion each. Too expensive?

  2. Westminster spends £13Billion+ a year decommissioning nuclear.

Rotting hubs at Rosyth. Nuclear dumped in a Scotland without permission. Scotland is paying for it. Paying too much for Defence and loan repayments, Not borrowed or spent in Scotland.
