Research – NHS spending on private sector in Scotland only half that proportionally, in England

In the Guardian today:

Private firms providing services to the NHS including healthcare and consultancy have made £1.6bn in profits over the last two yearsresearch reveals. The findings – on the basis of contracts worth £12bn – have prompted claims of “scandalous” profiteering, concern that the health service is being “taken for a ride” and calls for ministers to impose a cap on maximum profit levels.

The £1.6bn in profits made in 2023-24 and 2024-25 would have been enough to pay for 9,178 doctors or 19,428 nurses during that time, according to the Centre for Health and the Public Interest.

The research at https://www.nhsprofitmap.org.uk/ does not cover Scottish postcodes but in June 2024, Labour Outlook, no friend of the SNP, had:

Profits removed from all private/outsourcing contracts given out by the NHS between January 2012 and May 2024 are estimated to be £6.7 billion.

  • Or £558 million each year
  • Or £45 million each month (£44.9 million to be exact)
  • Or £10 million a week (£10.3 million to be exact)

The above figure incorporates the NHS in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. The NHS in all the nations are funded through a grant from the UK government.

Total amounts that have left the NHS in profits from outsourcing contracts given by each non-English nation between January 2012 and May 2024:

  • Scotland – £374.3 million
  • Wales – £282.4 million
  • Northern Ireland – £90.2 million

So, using these comparative data, multiplying the Scottish figure by 10 to make in comparable, per head, with England, we get £3.7bn, just over half the level in England.

  1. It beggars belief that the Labour Party in Scotland expects us to believe Sarwar’s claim that there were only 300 people on a waiting list in England compared with well over a 1000 in Scotland.

Why on earth would supposedly Scottish politicians (and he was taking great pains to point out how Scottish he was and how much he loved Scotland) so frequently run down their own country simply to show England in a better light? They are, after all, in their job because Scots voted for them so should be working FOR Scotland and not against it.
