NHS Northern Ireland faces stark warning as it suffers cancer mortality rate falls THREE times those in Scotland

Above, cancer survival rates improve in 22 out of 26 cancer types.

In NHS Scotland, the declines from a pre-pandemic to a pandemic set of figures were in 4 cancers, including these three, selected for comparative purposes:

  • Head & neck cancer: 1-year net survival fell 2.6% from 75.2 % to 72.6 %.
  • Oesophageal cancer (women only): fell 3.9% from 46.6 % to 42.7 %.
  • Non-Hodgkin lymphoma (men only): fell 3.9% from 68.0 % to 64.1 %.

The pattern shown in detailed Northern Ireland data, found these same cancers had one-year survival drops comparing the pre-pandemic and pandemic figures:

  • Head & neck: 9% from 77.4% to 68.4%.
  • Oesophageal: 11.2% from 53.5% to 42.3%.
  • Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma: 5.9% from 81.1% to 75.2%.

The NI data come from Impact of COVID-19 on cancer incidence, presentation, diagnosis, treatment and survival in Northern Ireland, published in the International Journal of Cancer (Impact Factor 7.4), in 2024:

The contrast is stark. Northern Ireland suffered greater falls in survival rats across all 3 of these cancers, but more than three times more for head and neck cancer and nearly three times more for Non-Hodgkin lymphoma.

  1. Sorry all O/T.How times have changed I am old enough to remember how we were told that the oil would run out in a few years but now all I hear from these Yoon politicians we have years of oil and gas in the North Sea even now a tory is spouting we have years of oil what a bunch of hypocrites they are.and we are the ones who have suffered.

    Rant over.

  2. And, of course the ‘Scottish’ Daily Depress headlines, ‘CANCER SURVIVAL RATES FALL’.

Every silver lining has a cloud attached as far as unionists are concerned, but they never mention the silver lining.
