In Labour’s second year, MOD spending in Scotland is still lower than the UK average, 18% higher, despite hosting the nuclear subs

From the UK Government‘s defence minister Luke Pollard, above, yesterday:

Long-term defence commitment in Scotland helps secure jobs and billions in export deals – Increased defence investment and dedication to Scottish defence industry directly supported £1.1bn in inward investment with defence firm Thales, securing and sustaining over 500 jobs. Hundreds of Scottish jobs are being created as the UK Government’s long-term commitment to defence investment in Scotland is helping secure deals with international partners.

The certainty of the government’s dedication to Scotland has paved the way for £1.1 billion in inward investment with defence firm Thales, securing significant export deals that will create and sustain over 500 jobs in Glasgow over the next five years.

How much does the MOD currently spend in Scotland and for comparison in other parts of the UK?

Actual direct/industry spending in Scotland is lower per capita than in regions like the South West (£1,120 per person) or South East (£810), compared to Scotland’s ~£390 per capita. The UK average is £460 per capita, 17.9% higher. https://researchbriefings.files.parliament.uk/documents/CBP-10517/CBP-10517.pdf

  1. 180,000 military personal . 10,000 based in Scotland.

Scotland pays too much for the military. Redundant weaponry. Nuclear dumped in Scotland illegally. Illegal wars.

Brexit lost £Billions on shared Defence costs.

  2. Do we really want Scotland to have defence spending on a par with rUK? I don’t.

For avoidance of doubt, I would also prefer nuclear submarines to be somewhere else, although I do recognise geography places Scotland nearer to key routes below the North Pole. Perhaps Greenland instead?
