From Delayed discharges in NHS Scotland monthly Figures for January 2026 published yesterday:

The average (median) length of delay for people delayed at the January 2026 census was 23 days. This is less than as at the census point in December 2025 (28 days), November 2025 (27 days) and October 2025 (29 days).

How important is this kind of information, 20% reduction in median, for NHS Scotland?

Short-term trend improvement — A drop from 28–29 days median in the preceding months to 23 days indicates some recent progress in clearing longer-stay delays at the snapshot census point (typically a monthly count of delayed patients). This could reflect seasonal factors (post-winter recovery), targeted efforts by integrated care systems (ICSs/ICBs), better coordination between health and social care, or specific initiatives to prioritise complex cases.

Impact on patients — Shorter delays reduce risks for vulnerable patients (especially older people or those with dementia), such as hospital-acquired infections, deconditioning (loss of mobility/independence), low mood, and poorer outcomes. Even a few days less can make a meaningful difference for individuals.

Bed utilisation signal — Reducing the median duration of the longest delays helps free up some bed days over time, which supports better patient flow through hospitals. This indirectly aids emergency departments (A&E/urgent care), ambulance handovers, and elective care by easing bottlenecks.
