From CHFS3 Monthly Performance Report December 2025 published on 4th February 2025, for the winter month of December 2025, the following data based on sample size 28 000 travellers:

  • Overall reliability – 87.5%
  • Weather cancellations – 11%
  • Breakdown cancellations – 0.9%
  • Customer satisfaction – 83%
  • Islander satisfaction – 75%
  • Vessel availability – 96.8%
  • Punctuality – 97.2%
  • Vehicle deck utilisation – 39%
  • Staff retention – 94%

Note – vehicle deck utilisation reveals the generosity of the Scottish Government funding, paying for ferries often half empty for much of the year in order to meet summer demand. Staff retention is crucial as we hear of short-staffing in the US and Canada leading to appalling standards and risks.

Notably on the much-reported Arran service

  • Reliability – 74.7%
  • Weather cancellations – 15.9%

Important note – The reliability percentage for CalMac ferries is based on all planned (scheduled) sailings, including those cancelled due to weather. It is typically calculated as the proportion of operated sailings out of the total scheduled sailings, so weather-related cancellations reduce the actual reliability figure and in the case of the Arran service in December, by nearly 16%!.

  1. “Official figures even in mid-winter reveal CalMac’s high performance standards, passenger satisfaction and the Scottish Government’s incredible generosity to island and tourist car-users”

Do these figures differ from the unofficial data that the BBC are producing on a loop , sourced via some of the residents of the islands and also via opposition parties , who are apparently all on record as being very ‘discontented’ upon some of the Ferry services provided by CalMac for some of the Islands…..though it is also to be apparent to all voters within Scotland that it is mainly the SNP who are to blame for what is presented as #FerryFiasco and so then #SNPBAD.

Should I and others on the mainland then be permanently confused, or are we being deliberately confused by the BBC , opposition parties and also by some of the residents on these islands, who all insist that the Ferry services are all to be categorised as being inadequate, deficient and so then not fit for purpose ?

    Kind regards

An eternal confused Scottish citizen aka Liz S
