In the Guardian and other UK media today:

UK’s ‘unsung army’ of full-time unpaid carers needs more support, report says – Resolution Foundation finds one in three carers from poorer families unable to work because of responsibilities. A growing “unsung army” of 1 million people with full-time caring responsibilities needs better support, according to a report that found one in three unpaid carers from poorer backgrounds were unable to work because of their duties.

In the original report but getting no media coverage:

Although Carer’s Allowance cannot compensate for the true value of care, there are comparisons that can be drawn to consider how its level might be raised. Increasing to the level of contributory Jobseeker’s Allowance, another non-means-tested benefit, would mean a weekly uplift of £8.75, to £92.05 a week (costing £470 million annually). Another option would be matching the amount that carers receive in England and Wales to those in Scotland, where claimants receive a Carer’s Allowance supplement of £293.50 every six months; this would mean a weekly increase of £11.30, to £94.60 a week (costing £600 million a year).

  1. Not the kind of thing the Grauniad’s Scotland thrashers, Severin Carel and Libby Brookes would mention because it is contrary to the ‘Scotland is bad’ paradigm.

  2. It is accepted that ANY UK report with info that reflects well on Scotland will be ignored , whether it be on the NHS , Housing , the Care Industry etc…

The corollary of course is that ANY news that reflects badly on Scotland will be amplified in the UK media with a phalanx of ”proud Scots” ready to put the boot into their nation .
