No evidence that any SNP MSP was spied on by staff

Professor John Robertson OBA

In my post earlier, I pointed out that there were no confirmed reports, ever, of an employer being spied on by an employee in the UK but many of the opposite. The supposedly Scottish media and Jackie Baillie have loved the rumours and have made as much hay as they can with them but even this morning BBC Scotland has burst their balloon with:

The Scottish Parliament says no “covert bugging devices” were involved in reports of MSPs being secretly recorded by members of staff. The Scotsman newspaper reported that a former worker had placed “listening devices” in the office of a female SNP politician in late 2023.

But Holyrood’s presiding officer has now said that while there was a “localised employment dispute” involving a constituency office, it was dealt with by the MSP in question after an external investigation. Alison Johnstone said one other historic matter had been raised by a different MSP, but that “they chose not to take further action” because the “employment relationship” with that staff member had ended.

The parliament said it had no information about any other complaints of this nature, while the SNP has denied that it was aware of any allegations. The claims were addressed in a letter to Scottish Labour’s deputy leader, Jackie Baillie, by Johnstone and the Scottish Parliament’s chief executive, David McGill. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cp84ppyznxyo

The stories may have their roots in a real story of an then SNP MSP’s inappropriate comments in Whatsapp which were leaked to the media in 2023, presumably by a disgruntled staffer. See:

SNP minister Elena Whitham apologises over leaked WhatsApp messages – https://www.cumnockchronicle.com/news/23662966.snp-minister-elena-whitham-apologises-leaked-whatsapp-messages/

In the above, we read that she – mocked the “ego” of constitution secretary Angus Robertson.

Not a resigning matter for me, that one. Just stating the bloody obvious in the light of his non-approved meeting with the Israeli depute ambassador in the middle of a genocide. If only one of his staff had leaked his intentions to do that.

  1. I’m afraid, despite their plummeting readership, it’s still the headline people see, even when not buying the rag, but just glancing when walking past the newspaper stand.

  2. SNP MSP’s should scour their offices, cars, and homes etc for any sort of spying devices. I’m sure it’s not that difficult for the Brit state to install such devices, they literally have thousands of English civil servants operating in Edinburgh…after all.

  3. M15 spy on people all the time. Including the SNP. Police illegally spy on people. Infiltrate ordinary protest groups. People on hunger strike. Nothing is done about it by unionist parties.
