The Emma Caldwell Public Inquiry must ask if the Scottish Labour Government of 20 years ago took its eye of the ball

BBC Scotland

From Emma Caldwell Public Inquiry begins work, published yesterday:

The independent Public Inquiry into the investigation of Emma Caldwell’s murder in April 2005 has been formally set-up and begins its work today (9 Dec).

Justice Secretary Angela Constance informed Parliament on the formal setting-up date and on the Inquiry’s terms of reference through a Government Initiated Question today.

The statutory inquiry will examine what went wrong in the investigation carried out by Strathclyde Police into the murder of Emma Caldwell, including the direction given by the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service.

It will examine what steps which could reasonably have been taken that might have resulted in Emma’s killer being apprehended and prosecuted at an earlier stage, and any other factors relevant to the circumstances of the investigation and related prosecution.

In September 2025, Emma Caldwell’s mother thought the prosecutors hope she dies before the truth of her daughter’s tragic death comes out. I’d say Scottish Labour has more to fear and hopefully this inquiry will properly assess their guilt.

The Daily Record then did not spend any time on the wider picture of misogyny and callous neglect, going back for a century, so deep within Scottish Labour.

Here’s what they won’t tell you, in case it should hurt Anas:

From BBC Scotland, in June 2024:

Nearly 300 rapes and sexual assaults reported by sex workers during the Emma Caldwell murder investigation were not dealt with by police at the time, a senior officer has confirmed.

Police Scotland’s deputy chief constable said an operation had been launched to examine sex offences which were reported around 2005. She said a number of the offences were now being dealt with by the courts. A former detective told the BBC he had received multiple reports of rape when he worked on the murder inquiry. But he said they were “boxed” – marked as irrelevant and not followed up.

The then Strathclyde Police launched one of its most expensive murder investigations after Emma Caldwell’s body was found in remote woodland in South Lanarkshire in 2005.

Imagine, these events took place in 2015 after 8 years of SNP government?

The media would be all over the current SNP First and Justice ministers, asking why they had failed to scrutinise Strathclyde Police? Why had they apparently ignored the reports of massive abuse of sex workers?

Had First Minister Jack McConnell and Justice Secretary Cathy Jamieson taken their eyes off the ball in 2005? Were they too busy campaigning to keep the UK together in the face of surging SNP support? Should heads have rolled?

Does this remind you of something else?

  1. Thanks John. Looks like an investigation into whether Labour in Scotland neglected to make sure there was no bias in the Scottish police work, around that time, is essential. Even to think there were possibly cases of serious crimes against women just thrown into the bin, is utterly disgraceful, but to think it was potentially a deliberate motivation in order for Labour to make themselves look good, is extremely concerning and very sinister indeed.

  2. Also Labour now………and reported by the Daily Record (was it just too juicy as a story for the DR to ignore or is someone gunning for Sarwar as Labour (pretend) leader here ).

Their headline on the 8 October ( a revisit , with more details, on a post that I previously made on here).

“Whistleblower felt ‘dismissed’ after complaining about Labour MSP’s links with sex offender”

“EXCLUSIVE: Emails obtained by the Record show concerns were raised with Labour nearly one month ago about Pam Duncan-Glancy’s continued friendship with disgraced Sean Morton”

“A whistleblower has criticised Labour after revealing he was the man who exposed a senior MSP’s friendship with a sex offender. The concerned citizen came forward last month to express his deep concern about the links between Pam Duncan-Glancy and Sean Morton”

“But his pleas went nowhere after a party boss said his team could not probe “personal relationships”. He said: “I felt dismissed when my concerns were questioned. They seemed unconcerned about the personal relationship involved which left me feeling completely unheard, raising even more concerns for the party“.

Morton , a former Labour councillor ,was apparently “a lifelong friend of Duncan-Glancy at the time of sentencing, but the friendship went on after his fall from grace

The Daily Record wrote “It can now be revealed that concerns were raised with Scottish Labour as far back as November 13th. In an email to the Scottish party, the whistleblower complained about the pair’s “ongoing” friendship and wrote”:

“I ask that this matter be reviewed promptly and that a public statement be made to clarify the situation. It is vital that public representatives maintain the highest standards of accountability, particularly where child protection and community trust are concerned. I trust that it will be handled with the necessary care and professionalism.”

“The matter was then handled by a UK Labour safeguarding officer who asked for more information”.

“The whistleblower told the party he had been informed that Morton had continued to be seen with Duncan-Glancy over “several years and most recently”.

“He added that her education brief meant the friendship raised “significant concerns” about her “judgement” and “professional boundaries”.

“The Labour official responded: “While it is our responsibility to ensure that Labour Party activities are carried out safely, it is outside of the remit of this team to assess the suitability of those that our members choose to have personal relationships with.”.

“A Labour source said: “A senior politician maintaining a close relationship with a convicted sex offender is not a private matter

“And insisting the matter is closed when there are so many unanswered questions looks awful. Whistleblowers must have confidence in the process.”

Just imagine for a moment what the outcome and the huge backlash would be if this were an SNP Minister and also the SNP’s same reaction as Labour’s was to just ignore it and so then clearly try to cover it up.

Then when exposed by a newspaper via a whistleblower……….the only action taken then was a resignation by the SNP Minister from their Ministerial post, voluntarily, but only after it was exposed by a newspaper, and then a party like the Labour party at Holyrood not making it a huge deal and so then demanding that the Minister should even consider their position as an MSP , as well as an inquiry into what Labour would call an attempted “SNP cover up”.

Then, to make matters even worse, what if then the SNP just said , as Labour said after Pam Duncan-Glancy resigned in her role as Labour’s spokesperson for Education and Skills , that as far as they were concerned “the matter was closed”.

Then of course with the majority of the media we would then have a widespread media coverage with all of them demonising the ‘Nats’ for trying to protect one of their own and also clearly trying to cover this up , as in not declaring that they had been told about this relationship one month before a newspaper exposed it.………..and that they, the SNP, had done nothing.

Then of course we have the Labour MP Joani Reid , elected in Scotland last year, whose main role as an MP seems to be one that is on a constant #SNPBAD watch as a Labour Crusader , where she currently is very very proactive in communicating how negligent she thinks the the SNP are as a Scottish government , especially on them failing to hold an inquiry into grooming gangs within Scotland………yet her party have clearly been negligent here with Pam Duncan- Glancy and this whistleblower , but that will not concern Joani Reid as her other mission is to try to deflect attention away from any #EnglandBad situations (Plural) and also the many #LabourPartyBad situations (plural).

I mean if you, as a political party, constantly condemn other political parties, especially the SNP, for what you declare to be their (supposed) failings and shortcomings then you need to also expect that your party will also then be judged when it actually fails to act and clearly is falling short in applying the same rules that you always say you expect others (the SNP) to always follow.

We all know Labour’s mantra is “Do as I say not as I do”.

That’s why a lot of us never vote for them.

BTW it may actually be the case that, for the media, this matter is now really closed, in respect to this clear lack of judgement and this unacceptable situation re Pam Duncan-Glancy’s continued relationship with a convicted sex offender.

Also as Labour are a UK party then in Scotland with most of the media that gives them a protected status , more so with the elections coming up next year, however for some reason in this instance the DR decided to buck the trend and that is most interesting especially as the author of this story on Duncan-Glancy was Paul Hutcheon).

  3. Here is another revisit and one that the BBC and other media failed to highlight as a conclusion of the Tribunal.

“Scottish nurse Sandie Peggie shared a series of offensive and racist messages in a private workplace WhatsApp and Facebook group chat in 2022, mocking the victims of devastating floods in Pakistan that killed over 1,700 people”.

“The messages, presented as evidence during the tribunal where Ms Peggie was claiming discrimination related to a transgender colleague, contained crude “jokes” and slurs

“One message said the country “looks like a giant bowl of coco pops” from space, and another suggested a new diet in Pakistan called “swim fast“.

“Other comments included, “What goes around comes around – Pakistan has been flooding Britain for years,” and a joke about the Queen offering “plenty of spare p*kis” to send back“.

“Ms Peggie also used racial slurs, which she defended in the tribunal by saying they were common terms during her childhood and that people of Pakistani heritage she knew were not offended by them at the time”.

“Ms Peggie described the messages as “distasteful” but intended as “dark humour” among friends. Her colleagues, who were in the chat, testified that they viewed the messages as racist”

In July 2025 the BBC stated that Peggie who was “at the centre of a tribunal involving a transgender doctor allegedly told colleagues she wanted to post bacon through the letterbox of a local mosque“.

Also that “Sandie Peggie made the comment at a work lunch with colleagues, along with other remarks insulting transgender people, according to testimony from Fiona Wishart, another nurse with NHS Fife”.

“Other colleagues “(plural) “had told her Ms Peggie had referred to Dr Upton as “weirdo”, “freak” and “it”.

“Dr Upton’s looks were mocked and was referred to as having a “pathetic voice” by Ms Peggie in the (WhatsApp) chat”

So perhaps that is why a former well kent , as in famous, champion of Ms Peggie has now failed to comment via her ‘X’ account on the findings of this specific Tribunal’s outcome on this case.

Where as most media have brushed over the above unsavoury aspects and other facts of this story , in what they have declared to be as some kind of “victory” for Ms Peggie in this.

    MSM Monitor posted this:

“We knew the NHS Fife tribunal didn’t believe a lot of Sandie Peggie’s evidence. We didn’t know that the ruling explicitly called her “untruthful”. The more you see of the full judgement the more you realise just how much the BritNat media left out of its coverage“.

The Tribunal stated “In our view it was an untruthful attempt to downplay what she had done, which she recognised as having included very offensive material“.

Aye media omission strikes again for the majority of the media.

Also that distasteful and offensive information which was formerly reported by the BBC prior to the outcome of the Tribunal on Ms Peggie’s unacceptable remarks and jokes , which some considered racist and “intolerant” of her Trans colleague, were then, post the Tribunal’s outcome not considered worth noting again by the BBC in their article on her supposed “Partial victory”.

Aye the media are very good at communicating their versions of the news to include omissions, or rather not include omissions Ha Ha , as in those crucial aggravating factors that they should have exposed , but instead they choose ‘Spin’.………..always.

That is where the real victim becomes the culprit and the real culprit is portrayed as the victim.
