NHS Scotland’s greater resilience and Scottish Government actions paying off as flu hospital admissions surge to FOUR times England with no reports of being overwhelmed

Professor John Robertson OBA

You may remember in 2020, Boris Johnson saying that NHS Scotland had resilience problems which would harm its Covid response. In the end, the excess death rate in England was twice that in Scotland.

Recently, we had Jackie Baillie making a similar morbid wish fulfilment prediction suggesting that the ‘SNP’ was not ready for winter.

It’s not working out well for Baillie.

Public Health Scotland (PHS) figures, external show that in the week of 24-30 November, lab-confirmed cases rose sharply to 1,759 compared with 845 the previous week. Hospital admissions as a result of the illness also rose by 70%, from 426 to 724.1

So, all things being equal with 10 times the population, we might expect NHS England to have an increase of 7 240 bit the figure is just 1 7002, just over a quarter of the level.

What’s my angle? Doesn’t this make NHS Scotland look worse? Scotland’s climate and older population always makes flu cases more common.

The higher admissions means it is more resilient because it’s coping with four times the rate.

My evidence?

  1. From Chat GPT:
Yes, climate affects the spread of influenza. Cold, dry conditions in winter help the virus survive longer in the air and on surfaces, and people spend more time indoors, increasing transmission. In warmer or more humid climates, influenza tends to circulate less but can still appear in seasonal peaks or year‑round in tropical regions.

  2. Labour down to 14% in the latest UK poll—but headlined in the Labour supporting “Scottish” press and no doubt a wee slot on Repressing Scotland tonight–as happens most nights.

    Advertisers call it “product placement”.
