From the Maginot Line we came late to Saint Valery
It was the winter of nineteen thirty-nine
When we arrived at France’s Maginot Line
We were more than fifteen thousand strong
Ready to stand our ground against the hun
From the Maginot Line we came late to Saint Valery
The panzers dashing to the coast were soon upon us
We paid a bloody price on Winston Churchill’s say
Marched ten thousand strong to years behind the wire
In the front line we were all fighting highlanders
The Seaforth, Cameron, Gordon and the Argylls
With the Black Watch, holders of the line at Arras
And gunners, medics and drivers from every part
From the Maginot Line we came late to Saint Valery
The panzers dashing to the coast were soon upon us
We paid a bloody price for a plan that could only fail
Marched ten thousand strong to years behind the wire
Every island, village and town felt the losses
Some lost every single young man they had
Left behind in France to face the blitzkrieg
It’s a betrayal that will never be forgotten
From the Maginot Line we came late to Saint Valery
The panzers dashing to the coast were soon upon us
We paid a bloody price for a plan that could only fail
Marched ten thousand strong to years behind the wire
When the blitzkrieg came, we were divided
The Germans dashed between us and the rest
The Brits headed fast for the coast to escape
But we were told to stay and hold the line
From the Maginot Line we came late to Saint Valery
The panzers dashing to the coast were soon upon us
We paid a bloody price for a plan that could only fail
Marched ten thousand strong to years behind the wire
For six months we fought a bloody rearguard
To protect the left flank of the weary French
Arriving in Saint Valery too late, far too late
And thick fog took away our very last chance
From the Maginot Line we came late to Saint Valery
The panzers dashing to the coast were soon upon us
We paid a bloody price for a plan that could only fail
Marched ten thousand strong to years behind the wire
Ten thousand and more of us forced to surrender
A long brutal march with damn little food or water
Twenty miles a day and murdered if you couldn’t
Five long years away from our homes and families
From the Maginot Line we came late to Saint Valery
The panzers dashing to the coast were soon upon us
We paid a bloody price for on Winston Churchill’s say
Marched ten thousand strong to years behind the wire
When we returned, many left behind in the ground
Churchill was the big hero who saved the country
But when it came to the next chance to vote
With our English pals we booted him right out
From the Maginot Line we came late to Saint Valery
The panzers dashing to the coast were soon upon us
We paid a bloody price for a plan that could only fail
Marched ten thousand strong to years behind the wire
From the Maginot Line we came late to Saint Valery
The panzers dashing to the coast were soon upon us
We paid a bloody price for a plan that could only fail
Marched ten thousand strong to years behind the wire

So sad. My father was in the Gordons at St Valery. He escaped but was turned in by a French mayor two miles from Free France. Spent 5 years in Bavarian and Polish prison camps. Never liked German nor French nor any other kind of fascist since.

Sorry John, but Davy Streel said it better with his anthem The Beaches of St Valery, recorded by the Battlefield Band. One of the great Scottish songs, and one which, naturally, you don’t hear too often on BBC Shortbread.

I’ve asked a few Scottish-military types who I know about this.
In summary, their view is that the Division’s losses were terrible, but in the circumstances at the time *somebody* was going to have to make the sacrifice, and that the 51st would be the best at it and fight to the last.

The Royal German establishment caused the 1st World War. The Royals. German (Victoria) children. German falling out with German. The ‘divine right to rule’. From ‘God’. Killing millions of people to try and gain and reserve power over others. Greed and manipulation.
Kaiser gone. Tsar overthrown. Russia revolution. 1917. Germans defeated by Russian winter. Sickness Spanish flu. Millions died. To try and keep the elite in power. Millions were killed. Royal/establishment. Still at it now. US tech companies etc. Too much power. Keeping too many in poverty and hardship.
Universal suffrage 1928. (one hundred years ago). Vote them out. Swings and roundabout. Illegal wars, financial fraud and tax evasion. Worldwide losing £Trillions. Causing mass migration. Keeping people in poverty, hardship and desperation. The illegal elites, illegal actions. Greed, and manipulation.
Leading to the Second World War. Millions died. £Trillions wasted. Russian winter defeated Germany. 26Millions Russians died saving the West. 1/2Million British. 1/2million French. US 1941. Less casualties. Making £Billions. Out of it. Aircraft used. Nuclear. Now wasting £Billion. Redundant weaponry worldwide wasting £Trillions. People starving and in poverty. Wealthy countries suppressing the poorer. Causing more problems than are solved. More equality brings more prosperity.
Churchill stole all Persians Oil (Iran) 1950’s. Start of Middle Eastern aggression by the West. A catastrophe. Totally unecessary. Buy it not steal it. Military support wasting £Trillions a year. It could be put to better use. Not killing people,
