How can this be a matter for government comment when that isn’t? BBC Scotland continues be far more likely than BBC Wales to seek government comment on matters that are first and foremost the responsibility of the GP and the health board/trust

Professor John Robertson OBA

BBC Scotland today had the above, left, story:

People suffering from the chronic pain condition fibromyalgia are being failed by the NHS, according to new research which found patients were waiting years for diagnosis, undergoing unnecessary tests and being prescribed harmful drugs.

Researchers at Aberdeen University said some doctors were even refusing to refer patients and dismissing them as “lazy”.

The senior consultant who led the UK-wide research is now calling on the NHS to overhaul its care of fibromyalgia patients.

The Scottish government said it would continue to work closely with the NHS to improve how services are accessed and delivered.

and in the 33rd of 35 paragraphs:

The Scottish government‘s public health minister, Jenni Minto, said: “I am determined to improve care and support for people living with chronic regional pain syndrome.

Now, you know, nearly everyone knows, responsibility for this woman’s treatment lies with her GP and local health board. It’s a very long way to thinking the Scottish Government is much involved other than in funding that board.

Moving on to the other, BBC England, report:

Breast cancer patients suffered unnecessary mastectomies, delayed diagnoses and a lack of compassionate care at an NHS Trust in north-east England, the BBC has learned.

More than 200 cases are now being investigated at County Durham and Darlington Foundation Trust (CDDFT) – 43 of these are reported to involve significant harm. One death is also being examined.

Women have told us they were left feeling “butchered” by surgery, while a leading expert says that what went on at the trust was “a textbook example of how not to carry out breast cancer management”.

In addition, we discovered that nearly £6m was paid out by the trust to clinics run privately by its main breast cancer surgeon.

In total, medical records of nearly 1,600 patients treated since 2023 are now being examined following concerns about the service the trust offered.

With due respect to the one woman in the BBC Scotland report, a more worrying case due to the wider scale of the problem. Surely, then that’s a case for UK Government comment to reassure the public?

In a 60 paragraph report, not one mention of ‘government’ or any suggestion that it should be asked to comment.

Just a one-of? Proves nothing?

Well, in June 2023, I did a four-week survey of how BBC Wales and BBC Scotland covered political issues and found:

A four-week survey [8 May – 2 June 2023] of reporting by BBC Scotland and BBC Wales gathered objective data on fifteen measures, including references to the devolved government within reports and reports of ministers or their party being causally linked to the content.  Twenty episodes and 140 reports from both BBC Scotland and BBC Wales, at around 06:30am, Monday to Friday inclusive, were transcribed and items codified, using clearly objective criteria. While there were many similarities between the two, BBC Scotland was very significantly, by a ratio of 2:1, more likely to mention the Scottish Government or the SNP within reports of problems than BBC Wales was to mention the Welsh Government or the Labour Party. Similarly, but less often, BBC Scotland was also more likely to report that the Scottish Government had been, for example, ‘accused’ of being responsible directly for a problem and to offer a platform for opposition parties to criticise the devolved government. BBC Wales did not ever platform opposition parties. https://talkingupscotlandtwo.com/2023/06/02/new-research-finds-bbc-scotland-is-twice-as-likely-to-politicise-negative-reporting-to-platform-opposition-voices-and-to-accuse-the-devolved-government/

This not accidental. It’s a deliberate agenda at editorial level in BBC Scotland to confuse potential voters into thinking that all bad news leads to the SNP.

  1. Every day on BBC Scotland and STV News there are individual cases of people suffering from ailments which are highlighted as being another example of the failures of the Scottish Government .

    Every day !

And each case is asking …no, DEMANDING , that the SG immediately throws money and resources at this individual case . This constant demand for resources from a very limited pot is echoed by the Burke and Hare of Scottish politics , Baillie and Gulhane , two self-publicising stains on the body politic .

Perhaps throwing money at every health issue that arises is possible in the Utopia that is NHS England or Wales where , if we are to believe unionists parties in Scotland , there are no problems whatsoever in their Health Services . But , in the real world of limited Health budgets there is no magic money tree – despite what unscrupulous unionist politicians would have you believe .

Everyone who is burdened under the weight of a chronic illness deserves sympathy and action . But in Scotland today , shackled to a failing UK Government where Health Care is a lower priority than pleasing the editor of The Daily Mail , budgets are finite and can be cut at the whim of a Westminster career politician looking to please people who don’t give a toss for Scotland or those suffering through lack of adequate resources .

  2. Thank you John, you inadvertently made my point by example – NOBODY beyond your catchment catches any of this crap from James Cook, it’s neither visible on the furrner version of BBC ‘Scotland’ nor it’s ‘Scotland Politics’ subdirectory – Scotland could be under a full scale invasion of “Hooray Henry’s” from Mars and the rest of the world would never know, such is James Cook’s ‘impartiality’, the ‘news where you are’ writ large.

I only found the article by your posted headlines and doing a search to find https://archive.ph/llnEy – It is almost embarrassing that ‘partial’ journalism has come to this at HMS James Cook, but I guess it pays for his expensive taste in suits….
