Child poverty in ‘UK’ soars to almost 50% higher than in Scotland with gap only likely to widen and a resulting increase of dying young

Professor John Robertson OBA

Thanks to Dottie for alerting me to this:

Published in Nursing Practice of 29 September 2025, One-third of UK children grow up in poverty with higher risk of dying young:

In 2023/24, nearly a third [31%] of children in the UK (4.5 million) were living in relative poverty after housing costs, with one million of these children based in the North of England. In some constituencies, such as Birmingham Ladywood, the figures are higher, with 62 per cent of children living in poverty [32%in Glasgow] . This report highlights how the situation is worsening, with researchers predicting that the number will rise to 4.8 million by 2029/30 if urgent action is not taken.

In a typically Anglocentric report, it is not clear is these are data for England & Wales of for the UK as a whole.

22% of children in Scotland live in relative poverty after housing costs, based on the most recent official data for 2023-24 from the Scottish Government’s Poverty and Income Inequality in Scotland 2021-24 report (published March 2025). This equates to about 220,000 children and reflects a slight decline from 24% in 2020-23, thanks to policies like the Scottish Child Payment.

One year into a Labour Government, the UK prospects are not good:

Scotland is the only part of the UK likely to see child poverty rates fall by 2029, according to a new analysis from the Joseph Rowntree Foundation. The charity says this is largely down to the Scottish Child Payment and the SNP’s commitment to reverse the two-child limit from 2026.

  1. it would be interesting to know how the best areas in Scotland compare with the best in E&W or UK.
Whilst it would great to see it drastically improved if not eradicated, it would be good to know how other nations perform which are similar in population size to Scotland and with which we compare ourselves when looking at the potential benefits of Independence.

    1. I think Norway might be a pretty good example…I think it’s independent and doesn’t have the country next door stealing their massive resources and revenues, then sending crumbs back with added contempt, to add insult injury, hmm.

    Vote Tory to die younger.
