From Energy Statistics for Scotland – Q2 2025 published today:

In the second quarter of 2025, 8.1 TWh of renewable electricity was generated in Scotland. This is the most renewable electricity generated in the second quarter of any year in Scotland

Scotland’s capacity for electricity generation from renewable sources has continued to increase and currently stands at 17.7 GW – a 4.3% increase compared to 17.0 GW at the end of the second quarter of 2024

As of the end of June 2025, there were 1,114 renewable energy projects with an estimated capacity of 76.5 GW in the planning pipeline in Scotland.

https://www.gov.scot/publications/energy-statistics-for-scotland-q2-2025/

From 2004 to 2023, Scotland transferred 232 097 GWh of electricity across the border to England: https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/energy-trends-december-2024-special-feature-articles

1GWh is worth around £200 000 – £300 000 per year. https://www.iea.org/reports/electricity-mid-year-update-2025/prices-trends-in-wholesale-markets-differ-across-regions

So, 232 097 GWh is worth around £60 billion.

  1. Cue scathing Scotsman article by ‘outraged’ Brian Wilson ‘slamming’ this ‘SNP renewables fantasy’ and demanding more ‘modular’ nuclear power stations be built in Scotland.

There will be no mention of his previous (continuing) senior role in energy companies after he retired as Energy Secretary.

  2. Funny, isn’t it, because away back in 2014 I recall a certain prominent English LibDemmer sneering into a TV camera and saying that if Scotland votes Yes, “we won’t buy any energy from them”.

Well, naturally, you’re not going to pay for something if you can simply take it and sell it back at inflated prices to the poor, wee country you got it from. Isn’t that what colonialism is all about?

      1. I wonder if John can shed any light on whether the Scottish government gets any support for helping bus companies run buses on electricity in Scotland.

I live in England( voluntary exile for family reasons) and the buses in Oxford where I live all have the message ‘supported by the UK government’ alongside their ‘green’ credentials.

A bit of research shows the British Government spent just under 38 million to encourage local bus companies to go electric. Apparently the Scottish Government also spends money on this, but are they reimbursed by the UK government or do they bear the cost themselves.

This is important because of the huge difference in the price if electricity in Scotland and Englsnd, with Scottish prices being higher despite the fact that we generate much more here.

I wonder how much we are subsidising green local transport in England while being denied that in Scotland while they trumpet the fact that they are doing this on the side of buses effectively running on Scottish electricity for which they pay nothing!

  3. we send £60 billion worth of electricity to England and Starmer says he loves the Saltire. That’s a good deal?

I look forward to Scotland’s “renewal”.

    without Starmer.

  4. I signed a petition about a new wind farm planned in Wales, apparently in an area where wildlife is already threatened. I’m sure they have other places to site it..petition sent by ‘Protect the wild’…sadly though their email was VERY misleading stating that the compapny planning to build the wind farm is ‘based in Scotland’, grrr. ‘Galilieo Empower is an Iish company, ‘international’ with offices all over inclduing the UK, and one in Edinburgh. It’s HQ’d in Ireland.
I emailed back re the petition and also messaged on bluesky to say they must amend their email info re the company is NOT ‘based in Scotland’. No reply. Fed up of these charities etc misleading people about Scotland.

    1. Is Scotland sending free elecricity to England just to enable UK government to subsidising ‘green’ buses in England through Zebra scheme that costs it nearly £38 million a year?
