B.C. Ferries told CBC News that the Queen of Surrey vessel is expected to be back in service along the Langdale-Horseshoe Bay route for Monday’s 1:15 p.m. sailing. The ferry operator said it has reinstated some previously cancelled sailings as it works to restore regular sailing schedules out of Horseshoe Bay. B.C. Ferries has cancelled a number of sailings between Metro Vancouver and the Sunshine Coast due to a mechanical issue over the weekend.
The company said crews on the Queen of Surrey vessel discovered an issue with the main engine’s turbocharger on Saturday evening, causing four late-night sailings to be cancelled. Those cancellations continued well into Sunday between Horseshoe Bay in West Vancouver and Langdale on the Sunshine Coast. B.C. Ferries also cancelled the 5:30 p.m. sailing departing Horseshoe Bay to Langdale on Monday.
As a result of the mechanical issues on the Queen of Surrey, B.C. Ferries says it is re-directing the Queen of Oak Bay from another route, to begin sailing the Horseshoe Bay-Langdale route.
The Queen of Surrey and Queen of Oak Bay are both 44 years old. BC Ferries is still running three even older (49 years) large ferries: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_BC_Ferries_ships
CalMac‘s oldest large ferry is the 42 years old MV Isle of Arran, then the 38 year-old Isle of Mull and the 36 year-old Lord of the Isles. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caledonian_MacBrayne_fleet
From a September 2022, Ernst and Young LLP survey for the Scottish Government’s Transport Scotland department, CalMac ferries are, on average, newer (25) than those in Norway (29), Australia (27) and Canada (38!). https://www.transport.gov.scot/publication/strategic-framework-of-options-for-the-chfs-network-project-neptune/benchmarking
