In the Record today, the Glasgow City Leader worries that Labour’s asylum hotels crackdown will lead to even greater numbers fleeing north to overload her city’s resources:
A crackdown on hotel stays for asylum seekers will be “disastrous” for Scotland as thousands try to get homes here, a council leader warned.
As part of a tougher regime for migrants the Home Office has halved the amount of time they can remain in government accommodation such as hotels from from 56 days to 28.
After that, those given leave to remain often end up homeless, and thousands are expected to come to Scotland as they have a legal right to be housed here that does not exist in England.
The situation is already difficult and was so a year ago.

Sir Keir Starmer has refused to intervene in Glasgow’s escalating refugee homelessness crisis, despite warnings the city faces a £109 million bill. The Prime Minister’s unwillingness to get involved comes ahead of a planned cut in the move-on period for refugees, from 56 days to 28 — a change officials believe could be “disastrous” for Scotland’s largest city.
This is a crisis made in London and dumped on Glasgow.
With it’s SNP council, Labour’s leadership is not motivated to help it and its local MSP, Scottish Labour leader, Anas Sarwar, himself of immigrant ancestry, shows no sign of standing up for his home city.
A year ago and this crisis was clearly coming:
There were 33,619 households assessed as homeless or threatened with homelessness. An increase of 1,088 (3%) compared to 2022-23, and the highest since 2011-12.
I’ll come back to the BBC claim that the data are the highest since 2002 and not 2012 as the Scottish Government suggest but, first, is that more than a thousand ‘Scots?’

An overall increase of 1 088 in a year when the Home Office allowed more than 1 300 immigrants entry, so homelessness fell among all but very recent arrivals?
There’s no mention of this key factor in the media reporting.
The trend:
There were 29,652 open homelessness cases in March 2024, which was a 15% rise on last year. There were around 58 000 cases in 2006, the last year of the Labour Government in Scotland.
The comparison:
Record homeless figures in England prompt calls to tackle ‘national scandal’. Latest housing data show 151,630 children in temporary accommodation – the most since records began. Shelter, the housing charity, said the government must “tackle the housing emergency head-on”.
From Shelter Scotland in a submission to the Scottish Parliament, January 2024:
We are in a housing emergency, and that requires an emergency response from government. A record 9,595 children trapped in temporary accommodation – up 130% since 2014.
All things being equal, England with 10 times the population might have been expected to have 10 times as many children in temporary accommodation or 95 950 but had 151 630. That’s 55 680 more than if they had an SNP Government, or 58% more.

Yes it seems at long last the penny has dropped that the UK Gov is now considering deserted military camps to house refugees. However I have a better solution just use all those hundreds of half empty Stately homes like Blenheim palace, Balmoral or better still the empty Castle Mey in Sutherland along all those temporary hospital beds erected during covid that are presumably lying in a warehouse now. I’m pretty sure refugees housed in the Castle Mey over the winter will maybe think that Somalia, Syria, or even Afghanistan wasn’t so bad afterall. Problem solved?

SKY News interviewed someone in England who was part of the ‘flag mounting mob’ that supposdley was an exercise to convey that this was ‘their country’ and not for ‘others’………but……….
Apparently his objection to those ‘others’ was that they were coming here “raping the women” and “committing crimes that we don’t agree with“……..
“We” ?……..”don’t agree with” ?
Surely no crime committed is something that any law abiding citizen would “agree with”……….or are there certain “crimes” that this young man considered to be acceptable dependent on who was committing the crime and dependent on what the “crimes” were……..such as public disorder disguised as a protest outside a hotel housing asylum seekers ?
So in shocking ‘news’ for some people within this ‘country’, be it the UK State or within England where this young man was based, we are expected to regard the (non) fact that ‘ no one within his UK “rapes women” or does certain “crimes” within the UK State or indeed within England that certain people, like this young man, “don’t agree with”.
Or is it really only ‘British crimes for British people’ or ‘British people for British crimes’……
The young man then tried to sell this as a “grassroots movement’ but further questioning then broke him down to concede that he was “affiliated with Tommy Robinson” and that “Robinson had given him these flags to put up”…..I suspect the words coming out of his mouth were also courtesy of Tommy Robinson.
The Far right are using people to do their dirty work…..to give the impression that all of this ‘uprising’ stemmed from a movement that they say is a grassroot movement….
So who is behind this ?
Who will gain politically for what has been presented as a failing of both the Tory and Labour UK governments upon what is referred to as ‘illegal immigrants being allowed to come here to harm our women, harm our kids, take our houses and take our jobs too but also simultanously take our benefits’………..????????…..So…..
The same women who before were all perfectly safe……..(1)
The same kids also before who were all perfectly safe…..(2)
The same houses which before were abundant …….(3)
The same jobs that were also abundant……(4)
The same Benefits that were ever so generous and willingly paid out to anyone who needed them…………(5).
The above (5) statements are only a reality within a Nirvana State…..and not in any way based on any actual reality that did already exist, does exist now or could exist in a post Brexit Britain……..as Brexit has impoverished many areas and many situations for some of those within other grassroot movements…….
That is down to……. not just the Tories and Labour…….. but also people like Nigel Farage, Tommy Robinson, GB News, MSM and indeed some of the Far Right organisations that seek to infiltrate and so pollute genuine concerns some ordinary people , aka grassroot movements, have who perhaps in relation to refugees fail to empathise, sympathise and so realise why some of these people come here seeking refuge from their own countries (which in some cases is down to their UK State being involved in the turmoil as in wars that have happened in their home countries of many of these refugees seeking asylum in the UK)……………..
Of course once they finish with the asylum seekers who then will the turn on ?
Spoilt for choice really…….anyone who they oppose or rather who the Far Right brainwashes them into opposing…..for any reason….and mostly those reasons that are fabricated and most likely to incite rage……….
**** the UK and all it stands for……….and also very much does not stand for aka represents.

Asylum seekers are not allowed to work. If they could work problems solved.
Abused women do not get legal aid. They can end up homeless. Some people have mental health issues and end up homeless.
Westminster Gov bombed other countries and caused mass migration.
