Scotland builds far more affordable housing than England and far far more than Labour ever did but Shelter Scotland is back to suggest Scottish Government failure

Professor John Robertson OBA

How do Scotland and England compare in terms of affordable housing?

Scotland generally provides more affordable housing per capita than England, particularly in terms of social housing and overall supply relative to population. Here’s a concise comparison based on available data:

Supply of Affordable Housing: Scotland has consistently outperformed England in delivering affordable homes per head of population. Between 2007-08 and 2022-23, Scotland delivered an average of 14.2 affordable homes per 10,000 people annually, compared to 9.8 in England. In 2022-23, Scotland completed 10,458 affordable homes (19.1 per 10,000 people), while England’s rate was 11.3 per 10,000. https://www.gov.scot/publications/quarterly-housing-statistics-march-2024/pages/housing-supply-including-affordable-across-the-uk/

Social Rent Focus: Scotland prioritizes social housing, with over 70% of its affordable homes since 2007 built for social rent (e.g., 7,000 of 10,000 annual affordable homes in the last UK Parliament were for social rent, compared to only 8,000 annually in England). https://scothealthequity.org/housing-in-england-and-scotland-a-comparative-analysis/

How the SNP and Scottish Labour compare in terms of affordable house building?

In the last 5 years of the Labour/Lib Dem government, from 2002 to 2007, only 371 homes for affordable rent were built.

In the last 5 years of the SNP Government, 2019 to 2024, 18 215 were built.

That’s an astonishing contrast, 49.1 times as many, revealing clearly that the SNP, on this as on so many matters, has replaced the Labour Party as the party of the people.

Why Shelter Scotland’s motives cannot be trusted

How Shelter Scotland politicises homelessness even though it is 50% more common in England

There are clear differences in reporting by Shelter in Scotland and in England.

For Scotland, they use “ national scandal” and “children trapped” but avoid such dramatic language in England.

Notice the numbers too, in Scotland 10,360 children living in temporary accommodation, which is I agree way way too high. In England 151,000 children living in temporary accommodation. With England having ten times the population of Scotland the figure should be roughly 103,600 but there are 47,400 [almost 50%] more children in England living in temporary accommodation. All of these figures are a disgrace. No child in either country should have to live this way but they really need to show all the facts and figures before condemning just one government.

  1. Shelter has long had some beef against Scotland, anything they argue should be taken with a pinch of salt and challenged – they nimbly shifted the conversation from comparisons with the rest of the UK to what Scotland do we want to be

I see the annual drug reporting fest is in full flow this morning too with presenters saying in advance of the release of the report that any drop in deaths will be merely a blip. If anyone is free between 9-10am this morning they might like to call Kaye and ask her about county lines, given these weren’t even mentioned in James Cook’s report on the BBC Scotland website

  2. BBC making sure that we in Scotland get no ‘shelter‘ from what is only, it seems, negative comments from Alison Watson, that then always identifies only bad and never any good , or any hope for any positive progress that has been made or could be made…..either now or in the future….via the Scottish government.

That then makes her a firm favourite and so a ‘GO TO’ person that the BBC in Scotland will always seek out an opinion from…..in their version of the ‘news where we are’………….

The editorial policy of the BBC in Scotland is that ………..

Scotland is S**** and also #SNPBAD

So naturally their ‘guests’ are those who need to help them communicate that negative message…….and the more OTT their negativity is, as guests, the more appearances they, as guests, will make on BBC Reporting Scotland, BBC GMS and all other BBC Scotland outlets……simples.

  3. A further startling comment on England I heard yesterday, is that Council house sales are 6 times the number of ‘affordable’ houses being built….

SG legislated against Council house sales in 2016 from memory, so availability of housing is increasing in Scotland…

If they were willing to outlaw Council sales in England and at least tax land banking, it would go a long way resolving many of the issues…

    1. Bob , Owen Jones currently has a video of someone who describes why …..

“Labour isn’t solving the Housing crisis”…..watch it , as it is still accessible via Owen Jones twitter ‘X’ account as only posted on 31 August.

His name is Adam Almeida, who is a writer and a researcher….

  4. Talking of negativity and also favourites of BBC Scotland….

MSM Monitor tweeted this on ‘X’

“During Branchform Scottish Labour circulated a video on Youtube called ‘Scandal In The SNP’. It featured Anas Sarwar & Jackie Baillie and included footage of BBC reporter Catriona Renton. They also had a website of the same name. The website was borderline contempt of court”

Attached to his tweet was something Labour has posted to advertise this ‘video’….

At the corner of the picture was a logo ‘Scottish Labour’ and the header was the word “Scandal” in big letters and underneath that word it also said “in the SNP”….

Included in the picture was Nicola Sturgeon, Humza Yousaf, Margaret Ferrier, Colin Beattie, Mark McDonald and Derek McKay……

In April 2023 Anas Sarwar posted a video where he had linked a tweet that said….

“While the SNP is mired in division and scandal, Scottish Labour is relentlessly focused on your priorities”….

In a still ‘Live’ case , Sarwar in the video, stated this:

“A significant day in Scotland with the arrest of Peter Murrell, who was the Chief executive of the SNP . Of course big questions to answer. The Police must be allowed to do their job. And I think there is also big questions for both Nicola Sturgeon and Humza Yousaf. But actually that’s not the biggest news story of the week. The biggest news story of the week is actually the fact we have the worst ever cancer waiting times in Scotland’s history. Cancer remains Scotland’s biggest killer, and at a time when we have an NHS crisis and an economic crisis, we now have an SNP government that is mired in Scandal, mired in division, out of touch , out of control and talking to themselves about themselves. This country needs leadership. It needs change. Labour is that change.”

    So where to start……first.

“The Police must be allowed to do their job” but I , Anas Sarwar , will add my skewed partisan opinion ( to try to gain a political advantage over the SNP) as to who has questions to answer on this (which then resulted in neither of those that he, Sarwar mentioned, being either charged or found guilty of anything in this case).

    Then secondly….

“we have the worst ever cancer waiting times in Scotland’s history” – post pandemic but apparently for Scotland that is not an issue that has had any consequences on our NHS….it has had apparently only impacted Wales and England as a consequence but not Scotland (according to Labour)…if , that is, you listen to Sarwar and so believe him. (this was a video made in April 2023 but…… “In April 2023, only 55.3% of people in Wales started their first definitive cancer treatment within the 62 day target, a figure that was the same as the previous month but lower than April 2022“…..In April 2023 , 73% of patients in Scotland started treatment within the 62 day cancer waiting times standard target time frame, though they , Scotland were meeting the 31-day standard with 95.5% of patients receiving treatment on time…so Wales were worst ….so what was Sarwar’s point ?

    Thirdly….

“we have an NHS crisis and an economic crisis”….I assume Sarwar meant the UK was the “we” that he was referencing in that statement….as it is and was the UK government who make and have made poor decisions upon the NHS that then can have and has had negatives consequences for devolved governments ….like lack of funding etc…..and our economy in Scotland is also hugely impacted by poor and wrong decisions made by UK governments for example Brexit. (BTW also Wales NHS were far worse than Scotland’s….but Sarwar meant that the “we” was Scotland alone)……..

    Fourthly….

we now have an SNP government that is mired in Scandal, mired in division, out of touch , out of control and talking to themselves about themselves

Labour “scandals” (some) Tulip Siddiq , Dan Morris , Mike Amesbury, David Graham , Vaughan Gethings, Colin Smyth, Andrew Gwynne, Labour Freebie scandal involving PM, Chancellor and others, Oliver Ryan…..then Labour “division” Labour Ministers resign as in Louise Haigh and then Anneliese Dodds, Labour suspends MP’s for not voting with the Labour government….and also suspends others who now saw Labour were a right wing party indistinguishable from both the Tories and Reform UK. Now we also see Labour are seen as being, bu the public, as very much those who areout of touch , out of control and talking to themselves about themselves“.

    Finally….

“This country needs leadership. It needs change. Labour is that change.“….yes indeed that is exactly what Scotland does need in the future but as an independent nation…..because that is not what we are getting now with any UK PM and UK government or indeed would get with any branch office manager of any UK political party in Scotland……the SNP have had to juggle things to try to mitigate the #S**** that they have to endure via various UK governments….that includes the economic consequences that have damaged our Scottish economy because of the Tories and Labour’s Brexit policy…..Labour also, as the new UK government , are embracing even more privatisation within their NHS (a result of them receiving political donations from Private Healthcare companies to certain Labour government Ministers, including the Health Secretary, and also the PM)…………..and then of course Labour are currently tanking in the UK wide polls….that’s because people know that now with Labour in charge within their UK there is no “leadership”, no “Change” and that Labour have not been and will not ever be any “Change” from the Tories for anyone within their UK….including very much Scotland.

Sarwar still grasping at straws while somehow placing himself and his Labour party upon a pedestal that assumes that both he and they, Labour, can then look down upon the SNP as if he and his party, Labour, are somehow beyond reproach…. as far as scandals, division etc are concerned……the proof is out there to clearly show that is not the case…..indeed it is the opposite………but Sarwar is only preaching to those who are already converted and also those that he assumes are easily converted….the rest of us know that he, Baillie and his Labour party know that we know the truth…..so then we will never be converted to vote for, believe in or want to be governed by any Labour government, UK or branch office.

  5. O/T

Revealed the other day , as in reported by the UK media, that the UK labour PM, Sir Keir Starmer, that he , as the , checks notes, UK PM, has a English flag in his home….of course he does, as he sees the UK as being synonymous with England.

Now today the Labour UK Home Secretary , Yvette Cooper, was asked on BBC Breakfast:

“If she’s got a flag on display in her home,” ?

Her (very enthusiastic ) response was ..why of course she does as she apparently has “Union Jack bunting, St Georges flags, St Georges bunting, Yorkshire Rose bunting, and Union Jack flags and tablecloths”…..

BTW it seems that neither the UK PM nor the UK Home Secretary have any Welsh or Scottish or indeed NI emblems, flags , or symbols etc to represent all of us as nations that are a part of their UK.…which they, as a UK PM and as a UK Home Secretary, are also supposed to represent, as Nations within their UK, as governed , via reserved policies, by them as being a part of the UK government……….

So Labour’s message is that outwith the Union Jack….they, as UK government Ministers and as a UK PM, will only display and so endorse flags, emblems and symbols that represent England (First)…….and that is then also as a way for Labour UK to thank some of those voters within Scotland who voted for Labour UK last year in the UK GE….as in now that you (Jocks) have voted for us , Scotland , you can now **** off………..as it will always be EVEL with all UK political parties including Labour UK….(BTW….EVIL also works too).

    1. Labour UK , via the UK PM and UK government Minister(s) going full tonto on flags that symbolise England and their UK (also considered to be England)…to keep the mobs happy and onside , who, as mobs, are currently protesting, as in revolting- in more ways than one- against people (refugees) whose countries are decimated by wars and so are controlled by those who murder anyone who they deem to be undesirables or opponents of their control, so they , as refugees, seek asylum here in the UK………also the same UK that has had, in some of these Asylum seekers countries, an involvement in these other countries wars where many of the asylum seekers have fled from….as has the USA.

What was it that Ian Murray once said in his complaint against what he saw as some of us in Scotland “obsessing about flags” when he then said “You can’t eat a flag”….oh wait that was only in reference to the Scottish flag….a banned symbol in Ian’s UK apparently ?…..the same Ian Murray who was willing to look like a complete idiot wearing a Union jack jacket, at an outdoor event, to symbolise where his, Ian’s, true allegiance lay…..#NotWithScotland

    2. Apparently John Swinney has taken down the Scottish Saltire flag outside of Bute house in Edinburgh. I wonder why.
At YouTube in the comments section, only the butchers apron, so called UK or British flag, is accepted as an emoji, that’s a recent restriction. They block out the Saltire.
