James Cook’s reporting does not hold water in a country with 5.5 million litres per person, 40 times that in England

Professor John Robertson OBA

From BBC Scotland‘s James Cook, today:

Rivers at critical level as Scotland’s water supplies feel the strain – Water levels are way below average after the driest spring since 1964 and a hot summer.

The problem is especially acute in the east of the country, where the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (Sepa) is now introducing curbs on some water use.

It said two catchment areas – Ythan in Aberdeenshire and North Fife – had reached significant scarcity, the highest level of alert.

but then 8 paras down when it’s safe for him to mention it, we see how ludicrous his opening line was:

Sepa said that without a period of consistent rainfall, other areas – including the Deveron and the Don in Aberdeenshire – could also escalate to significant scarcity in the coming days.

However, there remains some uncertainty about the impact of the remnants of ex-Hurricane Erin, which is due to bring wetter weather later this week.

Sepa said the restrictions follow “months of worsening conditions”, with every month of 2025 drier than average on Scotland’s east coast.

Scotland has not had a hosepipe ban since 1995 and there are no plans to introduce one.

No plans to introduce a hosepipe ban means simply, there is no uncertainty about the impact of the remnants of ex-Hurricane Erin. If Cook had even looked at the BBC weather forecasts, he’d see we’re in for such a soaking that his report would only be good for the bin.

How much more fresh water does Scotland have than England?

Scotland’s Loch Ness alone contains 7,452 million cubic meters of water, which is more than the combined volume of all lakes and reservoirs in England and Wales.

https://www.environment.gov.scot/our-environment/water/scotland-s-freshwater/ https://www.nature.scot/landscapes-and-habitats/habitat-types/lochs-rivers-and-wetlands/freshwater-lochs

England and Wales, by contrast, have far fewer natural lakes, with reservoirs like Rutland Water (12.5 km²) and Kielder Reservoir being among the largest, but their total volume is significantly less than Scotland’s.

Scotland’s water reserves are estimated at 5,500,000 liters per person, compared to England’s 134,000 liters per person, highlighting a vast disparity due to Scotland’s smaller population (around 5.5 million) and abundant resources compared to England’s larger population (around 56 million). Scotland is often cited as having around 90% of the UK’s freshwater resources, largely due to its extensive loch system and higher rainfall (averaging 1,500–3,000 mm annually compared to England’s lower averages, particularly in the south).

  1. The real story should be that if Scotland wasn’t anexed by the English in 1707 and had been left to to develop in a normal way we would have a population today of around 7.5 million. And that population would not be destended across one area with huge areas of Scotland left derelict for English c*nts to go shooting alongside their Scottish enablers.

Now let’s look at Irelend. What was their population before British interference, and what is it now 200 years later? They kicked the British out 100 years ago and it still hasn’t recovered to pre colonialisation levels.

There’s a common denominator. The UK is phucking CANCER.

  2. There are significant problems supply in England as well as severe water cleanliness issues. So, BBC Scotland has to imply that things are as bad – and, hopefully worse – in Scotland.

  3. Why is someone as senior as the BBC Scotland News Editor devoting his valuable time to such a contrived, negatively framed story delivered to UK-wide audiences (including via Radio 4) without context, perspective, comparative analysis?

After all, we were promised somebody of real substance in return for our license fee:

‘James Cook appointed BBC News Scotland Editor – James Cook has been appointed as the BBC’s new Scotland Editor after a competitive recruitment process’ – February 3, 2022 (https://www.bbc.co.uk/mediacentre/2022/james-cook-appointed-bbc-news-scotland-editor/ )

Gary Smith, Head of News and Current Affairs, BBC Scotland was quoted: “James has a passion for journalism, which shines through his reporting wherever in the world a story takes him. His intellectual curiosity, rigour and sharp mind have made him an invaluable member of every team he’s worked with. He also has a passion for Scotland, which will serve him well in this new role. I look forward to working with him and wish him every success as our new Scotland editor.”

Quite a journey then to propagandist – a passion for it?

  4. Wait a minute….Water shortage in Scotland….well then we, Scotland, will not be sending parts of England any of our Scottish water then…..phew…..as we currently (pun intended) send them our supposed ‘excess’ electricity….

So then as the James Cook of the BBC is promoting this news that we , in Scotland, have a shortage…… aka just enough for ourselves….as in no excess….then they , UK governments, will be unable to bleed the wells , in Scotland , dry…figuratively speaking.

Unless of course his, Cook’s, intel is wrong…..yet again…..as he …..yet again….fails to (deliberately) flush out all of the ****……in the ‘supposed news where we are’…..

So……….. let’s see….it’s the BBC….then it’s the James Cook….and it is the BBC in Scotland.…already this is looking dodgy and a tad like it is awash with propaganda…

So who leaked this story ?…

I am thinking that, as a story, it will quickly evaporate …I mean it’s funny how these stories just spring up when similar stories flow out of England……

I think it is just to try and muddy the waters as they ,the BBC, filter out the truth and then try to drown us, the Scottish public, with all of their misinformation…. as in their (Poor) coverage of everything….. but the actual “news where we are”……

I think what we in Scotland really have a shortage of….is a drought of honest, factual and truthful news via the…..so called….. but clearly not…’media’ here…..especially via the BBC…….

  5. Also they have an ‘expert’ who suggests that in Scotland we should use ‘untreated’ water to flush our toilets and wash our cars? All of Scotlands water is treated if not it can lead to, for example legionnaires disease and other deadly bacteria. Are the BBC actually suggesting that Scotland should leave our wastewater untreated?

    From Scottish Water website

Scottish Water is required to meet strict health based standards laid down in The Public Water Supplies (Scotland) Regulations 2014 and the treatment processes we use to meet these standards. How We Treat Your Waste Water

Your waste water passes down your drains into the sewer network, to one of our 1800 waste water treatment works.  We then reduce contamination in the water to safe levels before returning the treated water to rivers and the sea.

     A typical treatment process

    1. preliminary treatment (screening – grit removal)
    2. primary treatment (sedimentation)
    3. secondary treatment (biological filtration or activated sludge)
    4. final treatment (final settlement)

Are the BBC actually suggesting that Scotland should leave its wastewater untreated?

  6. O/T Not mentioned in any of our media today!!!

From the news section on NHSGGC Website.

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde Welcomes 274 New Foundation Year 1 Doctors

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHSGGC) is proud to welcome 274 newly qualified Foundation Year 1 (FY1) doctors as they begin their professional journey in medicine. This marks an exciting and important milestone for the new cohort, who will transition from academic study to clinical practice.

Maybe the ambulance chasers Sarwar and Baillie have told them that this is NOT an SNP bad news story!!!

  7. James Cook’s “Rivers at critical level as Scotland’s water supplies feel the strain” piece being platformed on the UK page https://archive.ph/SF81i verifies it it is propaganda for an England where millions have been affected by reduced water supplies and a hosepipe ban….

Whereas I have no beef with SW trying to convince consumers to reduce water and thus increase resilience, this ” In 2023/24, average consumption per person was 140 litres of water in England and Wales compared to 178 litres in Scotland ” canard really needs put into proper perspective, most notably the England and Wales so often used to flatter England’s poorer figures.

In the 1980-1990s, water consumption was 230 litres per head per day, and in long dry summers a fleet of distillery tankers were shipping water south to watering stations in Yorkshire whilst most of the rest of England suffered hosepipe bans.. – So effectively over 30-40 years England saved 39% and Scotland 23%, England still has hosepipe bans and Scotland doesn’t, DEFRA are finally beginning to do their job and SEPA never stopped doing their job, Water companies in England are skirting bankruptcy and SW isn’t… – How’s that for perspective….

  8. O/T apologies

Russel Findlay….is the current Tory branch officer manager ay Holyrood , he succeeded in getting that role after the disgraced previous Tory branch officer manager Douglas Ross was caught out…..as in Ross was ‘caught out’ for being a terrible colleague to another Tory , David Duguid.

So on the front page of one of the gutter press , The Daily Mail (supposed but not really ‘Scottish’ edition) has a front page headline….

“Now it’s time to curb Holyrood’s arrogant elites“…..(but remember WM is not full of “arrogant elites” …got it….. Ha Ha).

This is a story sourced from the “arrogant” Russell Findlay, whose own party in Scotland is failing, with him as leader, to “curb” the Tory exodus to the Reform UK party…..under the “arrogant elite” leadership of Nigel Farage, their UK real leader of their pretend party.

Apparently….in order to try to stay politically relevant , Russell has grabbed that attention of one of the gutter press and they state that he, Findlay, “savages performative parliament” as in Holyrood….so I guess no Tory will be standing next year in the Scottish elections if it is just a “performative parliament” !

(He, Findlay, also said in reference to the Scottish parliament (that he is member of) that “What goes on inside the concrete carbuncle at the foot of the Royal Mile (the same “concrete carbuncle” his, Russell’s, beloved Queen opened) has become increasingly irrelevant and at times damaging for most ordinary Scots”

So then it’s official….No Tory will stand for the Scottish parliament next year.…or rather as Russell calls it the “performative parliament” .

(mostly “performative” via the opposition parties , like Russell’s party for example)

Or even his other description being the “Concrete carbuncle”…..so then it looks like we will have a Tory free Scottish parliament…great I’m up for that….where do I sign up to make sure it comes to pass…..

At last ….finally some real Tory “common sense” (as favoured once by Boris Johnson who wanted the public to use their “common sense” once ….well somebody did…. as he, Boris J, had to resign as the former UK Tory real leader and former Tory PM)…………(he jumped before he was pushed really)

So now it looks as if Russell Findlay is also making a public resignation for the whole Tory party in Scotland…..in him publicly dissing and demonising the place that he works in….(jumping before pushed next year….me thinks).

Also Findlay calls for an “overhaul of power to stop slide into a Nationalist one party State”….this from the pretend Tory leader of a party in Scotland whose polling outcomes in recent polls have been a disaster….as Russell’s own Tory Councillors in Scotland (and also a recent Tory MSP, Jeremy Balfour) have left the Tory party and they are leaving the Tory party here in Scotland that is the party which is (supposdley) led by HIM , Findlay, in Scotland……

How (un)inspiring he , Findlay, must be as a pretend ‘Scottish’ leader….or rather not.

However this stupid and pointless (Tory campaign) article declares that he, Findlay, demands a radical power shift …..however when his own party kept winning UK GE’s we never heard Russell Findlay refer to the UK being a Tory ‘one party UK State’….as apparently that was just fine and dandy for Russell. (and the Daily Mail too).

Findlay stated “the SNP are running Scotland into the ground”….I think that is the job of UK governments surely, including the former Tory one, hence why the Tories never win a majority in Scotland and also the rest of the UK got rid of them, the Tories, last year as their (previous) UK government as they, the Tories, were “running” the “whole UK State into the ground ” as well……

So why does Russell Findlay think his party lost the last UK GE ?

Could it be that for Scotland and also many other places within the UK State, that WM (especially under the Tories) was (and still is) seen to be a “performative parliament” full of “arrogant elites” who were and still are, for many areas within the UK State, seen to be “running certain areas within the UK into the ground” due to a lack of funding and a lack of interest in these specific areas…..outwith the South East of England.

Why does he, Findlay, also think his party are losing Tory politicians and Tory party members to Reform UK via many defections, lost support and losing their party voters ? (and also losing former Tory donors to other parties).

However why does Russell Findlay think anyone with a brain and a smidgen of ‘common sense’ would either, take notice of him, believe him or not see through him in his desperation to try and be relevant politically within Scotland….when the polls are reflecting that his party, in Scotland, will be decimated…..and I suspect if that does happen Russell Findlay will be the ex Branch officer manager of the Tory party here….as in even more good news.

Actually talking of “Branch” well I think Findlay may just offer an ‘Olive branch’ to Reform UK in Scotland to try and keep onside with some wavering Tory voters…as he is another one who lacks principles and any real direction other than the wrong one….

BTW this story is also in the Daily Telegraph as a small front page story…as another Tory paper…..

It is also at bottom of front Page of The National with a headline…

“SNP cronies: Tory leader attacks Scots Civil service”….

God give me strength…..Findlay clearly is one who cannot see himself as (many) others see him….Idiot springs to mind…..politically clueless also.
